Groton man charged in attempted market robbery
Groton —City police arrested a local man early today after they say he attempted to rob Avery Market on Shennecossett Road.
Police were called to the convenience store at 5:22 a.m. where officers learned a man had implied he had a gun and demanded cash from the store clerk before fleeing the store. Shortly after 8 a.m., police said a man matching the suspect's description was found on Benham Road and identified as the would-be thief.
Gary Francopoulos, 38, of 552A Shennecossett Road, who is on probation for a 2011 robbery conviction, was charged with attempted first-degree robbery and attempted second-degree larceny. Held in lieu of a $100,000 bond, Francopoulos is scheduled to appear Tuesday in New London Superior Court.
