Stonington to hold Jan. 14 workshop on vision for downtown Pawcatuck revitalization
Stonington — The Economic Development Commission will hold an interactive community workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 14, in which it will seek community input to help it develop a vision for a revitalized downtown Pawcatuck.
The latest of the EDC’s public workshops over the past two years comes as the long-awaited redevelopment of downtown Pawcatuck is picking up momentum.
The long vacant and dilapidated Laura's Landing building is being renovated into apartments and restaurant space, the Campbell Grain building has been demolished and plans are being created to market it to developers, Jewett City Savings Bank has opened in the former Citizens Bank building and Hoof’s restaurant has been drawing large crowds to a formerly vacant building.
There are also discussions among town officials about extending the riverwalk along the Pawcatuck River and building a pedestrian bridge across the river into downtown Westerly.
The forum is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the new School Administration Building located at the former Pawcatuck Middle School.
The workshop session is designed to get residents to share what they would like downtown Pawcatuck to look like. The forum will focus on four areas: riverfront access, development of vacant properties, redevelopment of historic and other buildings and the streetscape.
“To develop a Vision for a future Pawcatuck, we must engage the community to understand WHAT THE COMMUNITY WANTS — that’s where YOU come in!" states the EDC’s flyer for the event.
