Stonington reminds residents of tax bill deferral deadline

Stonington -- Tax Collector Linda Camelio is reminding residents that they have until Jan. 29, 2021, to apply for a deferral of the second installment of their annual real estate, personal property and motor vehicle supplemental taxes.

The program, which was the result of an executive order by Gov. Ned Lamont, is meant to benefit taxpayers who need a deferral due to furlough, layoff, business closure or other circumstances related to COVID-19 pandemic that have caused them financial hardship.

Applicants must provide a simple explanation of their need for the deferral as well as a signature swearing the information is true. Delinquent taxes do not qualify for deferral.

The tax office suggests that residents obtaining deferrals make monthly payments because when the deferment period ends on April 1, 6% interest will be applied to any outstanding balance.

Any application after Jan. 29 will not be accepted per Lamont’s executive order.

Applications can be found at http://www.stonington-ct.gov on the Stonington and Pawcatuck Community Forum Facebook pages and the tax collector’s website. Applications may be emailed to collector@stonington-ct.gov; mailed to Stonington Tax Collector, 152 Elm St., Stonington, CT 06378, or put in the drop box in front of Town Hall. Applications may also be picked up in the tax office.
