Yale New Haven Health pharmacies providing access to free prescriptions

Yale New Haven Health pharmacies, including the one at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, are partnering with Dispensary of Hope, an organization that provides free medication to low-income, uninsured Americans.

The YNHH Pharmacy at North Haven Medical Center also is a partner, and the pharmacy at YNHH’s Bridgeport Hospital will become one when it opens later this year.

“When people are forced to make difficult choices, such as paying for rent, putting food on the table, or acquiring life-saving medications they need, it is their health that frequently takes a back seat,” Debbie A. Chisolm, YNHH’s associate director of retail and specialty pharmacy services, said in a statement. “By partnering with Dispensary of Hope we can make a significant and positive impact on the lives of patients in need.”

To be eligible, a patient must be uninsured and have an income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level. For a single person, that means an annual income of $40,770. Qualifying patients must also have a prescription for medication. Available medications include drugs to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stomach ulcers, diabetes and more.

Dispensary of Hope was started in Nashville, Tenn., in 2003 by a doctor who worked with the local medical community to donate unused drug samples to free clinics and pharmacies. It now receives donated medications directly from manufacturers and distributors and distributes them at more than 200 sites nationwide.
