    Community Bulletin Board for June 30, 2024

    East Lyme library events for July

    The East Lyme Public Library has a wide range of events in July, starting with STEM-based learning activities at the Niantic Farmers Market, which hosts staff from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 11 and 25. The booth will also be up on the second and fourth Thursdays in August.

    Other events include: 6:30 p.m. Trivia Night on Tuesday, July 30, at the East Lyme Senior Center; Silent Book Group, 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 29, in the East Lyme Room; Novel Book Group at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, in the East Lyme Room; Mystery Book Group at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, in the East Lyme Room; Men’s Book Group at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, in the East Lyme Room, and the new Brookside Farm Museum-Homegrown National Park Book Group 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 and Aug. 7, in the Brookside Farm Museum and Barn.

    Other programs include “Favorite Hits” with Sal Basile at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, in the East Lyme Room, with music including Bobby Darrin, Brenda Lee, The Four Tops, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and later artists, such as Eric Clapton, Santana, and Steve Winwood.     There will also be the second in a Journaling Series with Jane Rossi at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, in the East Lyme Room; Storybook Trail at the perimeter of Samuel M. Peretz Park at Bridebrook, featuring Abi Cushman’s “Flamingos are Pretty Funky.” Or enjoy Mermaid Storytime at 10 a.m. Thursdays from June 20 to Aug. 8 at Hole-in-the-Wall Beach.

    Other library-sponsored events include Family Fun at McCook’s Point Bandshell from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays. July 2: Talewise Science Adventure; July 9: Austin Dailey DJ Dance Party; July 16: John Higby’s YoYo Show; July 23: Matt Matthews’ Magic Show; July 30: Steve Elci & Friends: Music for Kids.     Summer STEAM Workshops for Kids & Tweens registration has begun. It meets 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays in the Olive Chendali Room. Register at (860) 739-6926 ext. 2.

    July 2: Shell & Bee Studio engages young learners in art activities based on the book “Mix It Up” by Hervé Tullet.

    July 9: Push and Pull: Build and experiment with pulleys, levers and wedges with Miss Sarah.

    July 16: Ocean Creature Features: Discover adaptations that let marine animals thrive in the sea with Miss Sarah.

    July 23: Orchestra Storytime: Explore Musical Instruments with Ann Marie Perry from the Friends of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra.

    July 30: Kitchen Science: Bubble, mix and stir your way to slime and rainbows with Miss Sarah.

    White Elephant Sale intake July 1-3

    The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme’s annual White Elephant Sale organized by the Ladies Benevolent Society, a summer mainstay of the area since 1936 (except for two years due to the pandemic), will run July 12 and 13 this year.

    Intake for the sale continues from 9 a.m. to noon on July 1 to 3. For more information about the sale, including acceptable items to donate, visit www.fccol.org/wes. If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, call the church office at (860) 434-8686.

    The sale itself takes place both inside and outside the church on Friday, July 12, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., with a food court at lunch, and on Saturday, July 13, from 8 to noon, when most items are half-price. Coffee and doughnuts are available both days. Cash or check only.

    Proceeds from the sale benefit the many ministries of the church, including a wide variety of local, national, and international endeavors such as food pantries, health organizations, family support centers, children’s programs, literacy volunteers, affordable housing, native American causes, social justice initiatives, and disaster relief.

    Norwich Toastmasters meet July 3

    Are you looking to improve your communication skills? Norwich Toastmasters meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month and provides an opportunity to learn how to improve your communication and leadership skills.

    The next meeting is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, at the Chelsea Groton Bank, Norwich/Westside Branch, at 444 W. Main St., Norwich.

    Correction on East Lyme carnival hours

    The annual carnival at St. John’s Church, Niantic, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 19, 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 20, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 21. The hours were given incorrectly in last Sunday’s Bulletin Board.
