New London man indicted on federal drug, weapon charges

A 34-year-old New London man indicted earlier this month on federal drug and weapons charges pleaded not guilty to the counts on Thursday, federal court and law enforcement officials said.

Luis Oliver-Garcia, described in a news release as a “large-scale distributor of cocaine,” is accused of using a Waterford storage unit to stash narcotics.

Investigators allege Oliver-Garcia on June 21 arrived at the Cross Road storage facility ahead of a court-authorized search of the unit. Police said they found 3 kilograms of cocaine, along with $30,000 in cash and a 9-mm firearm, inside the unit.

More cocaine and two boxes of ammunition were found in Oliver-Garcia's vehicle, officials said.

A federal grand jury in Bridgeport on July 2 indicted Oliver-Garcia with possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Oliver-Garcia, who has previous state convictions for felony drug distribution and weapons possession offenses, has been detained since his June 21 arrest.
