Norwich Public Utilities issues power alert through Wednesday

Norwich ― With another stretch of hot weather likely to impact the state this week, Norwich Public Utilities has issued its second power alert of the season through Wednesday.

NPU expects very high demand for electricity during the early part of the week and is urging customers to conserve electricity during the day if possible.

A portion of NPU’s annual costs for electricity are tied to peak demand days that could take place Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday this week. By using energy efficiently during that period, customers can help keep overall electric costs down throughout the year for themselves and the utility.

Also, reducing energy demand during peak hours eases the strain on NPU’s infrastructure, including transmission lines, distribution lines, and transformers. By reducing the wear and tear on NPU’s system, the equipment will be able to cool down faster in the early evening and overnight, helping to improve its reliability, NPU officials said.

“The next three days are going to be a challenge – for our customers and for NPU,” utility General Manager Chris LaRose said in a news release. “But by keeping an eye on energy use and being aware of the dangers of the high temperatures, we are hopeful that we can get through this latest heat wave safely.”

NPU recommends residents delay using high-energy consumption and heat-generating appliances, such as dishwashers and dryers, until after 8 p.m. and set air conditioners to 72 degrees. Avoid using the oven for cooking. Use window shades to block the sun and install energy efficient lighting.
