Groton council approves additional $1.7 million for Sutton Park renovations

Groton ― The Town Council this week approved an additional $1.7 million to complete proposed renovations to Sutton Park.

The project already had an approved budget of $2.5 million, from a variety of funding sources, to pay for a new restroom, upgraded and expanded skate park, landscaping, a multi-use path, and parking lot improvements.

But another $1.7 million was needed to fund the full renovation plan that includes fitness stations, grills, another basketball court, playground, seating area, benches, bike racks, trash containers, trees and pavilions.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Town Council for their ongoing support and for approving the additional $1,715,133 needed for the Sutton Park renovations,” Parks and Recreation Director Mark Berry said Friday. “This decision reflects their recognition of the value that parks and recreational spaces bring to our community. Investing in parks like Sutton is an investment in the well-being of our residents, providing spaces where families can gather, children can play, and people of all ages can stay active and engaged.”

“These enhancements will make Sutton Park an even more vibrant and welcoming place for everyone, and we appreciate the council’s commitment to making these improvements a reality,” he added.

The resolution approved by the Town Council on Monday calls for using $242,246 of American Rescue Plan Act funds and $1,472,887 from the town’s capital reserve fund and referring the matter to the Representative Town Meeting.

The matter will go to the RTM Finance Committee and full RTM on Nov. 13 for approval.

A Planning and Zoning application for the proposed improvements is under review by town staff. A date for the Planning and Zoning Commission’s review has not yet been set, according to Deb Jones, assistant director of planning and development services.
