Cross Sound Ferry awarded $3.9M federal grant

The Cape Henlopen docks at the Cross Sound Ferry Terminal in New London on Friday, Aug. 14, 2020, from one of its runs to Long Island. While docked, its crew was presented with the Public Service Award by the Coast Guard for responding to a boat in distress and taking on water north of Plum Island on July 19 and rescuing the five people on board. New London―The Cross Sound Ferry Terminal on the city’s waterfront has been awarded $3.9 million in federal grant funding to make several infrastructure improvements.

The grant, through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration, was announced Wednesday by U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District.

The grant will be used to construct a new bulkhead and install new mooring pilings and ferry ramps. A floating loading platform will be added at the site and existing bulkheads will be repaired.

Courtney in a news release described the grant as “very competitive” and praised Cross Sound Ferry officials for their work in securing the money.

“The new funding will allow Cross Sound Ferry to make much needed improvements that will directly contribute to New London’s ongoing work to improve shoreline infrastructure,” Courtney said.
