Old Lyme ― Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School’s Eco Warriors hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday for the school’s renovated greenhouse that was built in the 1970’s. A grant paid to replace broken glass panels, a watering system and a fan.

Members of the Lyme Old Lyme Food Share Garden assisted by installing irrigation and hydroponic systems and worm bins for food waste compost in the renovated greenhouse.

The student group started last year by creating a pollinator garden in front of the school.

The students will start growing nasturtiums, marigolds, cuttings of herbs, and lettuce plants in the greenhouse and will then plant them in the Food Share Garden located at 26 Town Woods Road. The harvested vegetables will then be donated to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/ Labor Food Center.

The students have also gone on hikes, visited a Noank oyster farm, saw eagles on the Connecticut River, and visited the marine science labs at the University of Connecticut Avery Point in Groton.
