Local roundup: Horton joins UConn football coaching staff
Storrs — Jarren Horton, who was serving as a defensive assistant and secondary coach with the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football, has been hired as an assistant coach at UConn, head coach Randy Edsall announced Tuesday.
Horton replaces Jon Wholley, a 2003 UConn graduate and the linebackers coach for three seasons who left "to pursue other professional opportunities," according to a UConn release.
Horton was a defensive back at Portland State from 2010-12 and graduated from Central Washington in 2015.
Prior to joining the Huskies he worked as an assistant at Vanderbilt in 2015 and 2017 while working as a defensive assistant with the NFL's Cleveland Browns in 2016. He was a graduated assistant at Southeastern Louisiana in 2018 before joining the Atlanta staff in the AAF this spring.
College baseball
• Eric Marriott went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and three RBI as Mitchell College rolled to a 13-1 victory over city rival Coast Guard Academy. Ryan Solimine (2-1) pitched six scoreless innings for the Mariners (7-5), allowing only three hits while striking out four. Markus Melendez, Sam Majewski and Justin Johnson also had multiple-hit games for Mitchell. Trey Rittenhouse drove in the lone run for the Bears (5-3) with an RBI single in the ninth.
College softball
• Coast Guard split a nonleague doubleheader with Roger Williams. Coast Guard won the opener 16-5 in five innings but host Roger Williams scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for an 11-10 win in Game 2.
Courtney McKenna, Charlee Kraiss and Waterford's Claire Hurley drove in three runs each in the opener and teammate Kayla Sowers was 3-for-3. Maggie Perez had two hits and three RBI and McKenna drove in two runs in Game 2 for the Bears (6-6).
Boys' basketball
• Waterford finished third in the final New Haven Register/GameTimeCT state media poll. The Lancers (26-1), who captured the Division II state title for their second state championship in a row (they won Division III in 2018), finished with 524 points. Divisin I champion East Catholic (27-1) was the unanimous No. 1 with all 20 first-place votes and 600 points, while Division I runnerup was second with 542 points. Old Lyme (21-6), the Division V runnerup, finished with 16 votes.
Men's tennis
• Julian Tien and Will Cannon won at No. 1 doubles and each won their singles matches to lead Connecticut College to a 6-3 win over Dallas Baptist on Monday night at Abilene, Texas. The Camels (4-3) concluded their spring break trip at 4-2. Guillermo Rincon-Garcia, Sean Jenkins and Walter Komishane also won singles matches for the Camels.
