Local roundup: Brewer leads Wheeler boys' basketball comeback against Stonington

North Stonington — Zane Brewer scored 27 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and the Wheeler High School boys' basketball team defeated Stonington 41-40 Thursday night. Wheeler, playing its season-opener, overcame a 24-13 halftime deficit. Brewer added 10 rebounds and two assists for the Lions, while James Main had nine points and five rebounds. Elijah Cornell led Stonington with 10 points. In other games: • Amyre Gray finished with a game-high 27 points, including four 3-point field goals, in St. Bernard's 95-47 victory over Woodstock Academy. In addition, Curtis Marshall had 18 points for the Saints, Amare Marshall 17 and Tyler Mangual 16. The Saints led 29-11 after one quarter. • JJ Robinson scored 23 points, going 9-for-12 from the free throw line, to lead New London past Waterford 84-58. Amir Hall added 20 points for the Whalers (2-0) and Jack Philistin had 14. Parker Spencer scored 34 points for Waterford, including five 3-pointers and went 13-for-20 from the foul line. • Amani Dudley had 19 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in Ledyard's 76-54 victory over Plainfield. Luke Shevlin added 11 points and 15 rebounds (11 on the offensive boards), Calvin Casavant had 15 points and four rebounds and Cam Weber and Jack Leaf had 11 points each for Ledyard. • Julius Washington finished with 36 points in Grasso Tech's 92-57 victory over Platt Tech. Ryan Gemaly added 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Eagles, Ethan Chacha had 12 rebounds and Jerry Santiago six assists. • Killingly topped East Lyme 71-55 in the season opener for both teams. Mike Timpano finished with 23 points for East Lyme. Johnny Kazantzis (22 points, 12 rebounds) scored his 1,000th career point for Killingly. • Henry Champagne had 15 points and Jadiel Thomas 11 in The Williams School's 74-35 loss to Harvey. H.S. girls' basketball • Melanie Hernandez had 12 points for Grasso Tech in a 35-19 loss to HMTCA. The Eagles fell to 0-3. Hernandez had 13 points in Wednesday's 26-24 loss to Vinal Tech. • Zoe Browne had nine points and 18 rebounds for Wheeler in Wednesday night's 39-31 victory over Griswold, pushing the Lions' record to 2-0. Hayden Bresnan had 13 points and four steals and Abby Butremovic 12 points for Wheeler. Abby Matheson scored 16 points for Griswold (1-1). • Phoebe Carpenter had 16 points for Lyman Memorial, which opened the season Wednesday with an 82-27 loss to last season's Class M runner-up in Windham. H.S. swimming • Freshmen Logan Couture and Jack Bassett completed a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle as Waterford defeated North Haven 97-81 to open the season and Ethan Jones, Calvin Miller and Bassett went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke. Alex Startz added a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, qualifying for states in both events. • Gabe Pacheco won the 200 individual medley (2:08.64) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.30) in the Fitch co-op's 86-79 loss to Hand. Pacheco also joined Evan Hespeler, Joel Hespeler and Valentino Tippets in finishing first in the 200 medley relay, while William O'Donnell (200 freestyle) and Evan Hespeler (100 backstroke) also picked up wins in individual events for the Falcons. • Ben Morales took the 100 backstroke and Johnny Ren the 100 breaststroke for East Lyme in a 99-74 loss to Fairfield Prep. Ren, Jin Huh, Julian Horst and Eric Yang won the 200 freestyle relay for the Vikings and Albert Zhu, Eduardo Morcos, Ian Liu and Connor Foerster took the 400 freestyle relay. H.S. girls' hockey • Sophia Gouveia of Wheeler scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Woodstock Academy co-op defeated Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe 3-2 in overtime Wednesday. Ireland Wilford of NFA scored the other goal for Woodstock (2-1). H.S. wrestling • Griswold/Wheeler edged Waterford 40-39 on Wednesday on criteria, with the team having the least amount of forfeit in the match claiming the victory. Seth Christie (126 pounds), Vincent Andreozzi (138), Jesus Busanet (144), Layne Moss (150) and Russell Stewart (165) won by pinfall for Griswold, while Maxwell Gray won by decision at 175. Lachlan Burdy (106), Luke Westkott (120), Declan Fagan (132), Lucas Gannotti (157), Braeden Sollima (215) and Cooper Myers (285) earned pins for Waterford, while Trey Evans won by decision at 113. • Joshua Cuevas (120), Jackson Sorel (132), Edward Lavoie (144), Savion Witherspoon (150) and Naim Wallace (165) won by pin for NFA in a 47-36 loss Wednesday night against Windham. • Fitch's Shad Stewart won by pin at 165 pounds in Wednesday's 69-12 loss to defending Class S champion Killingly. Men's basketball • Rhode Island College went on a 10-0 run in the final five minutes to seize control in a 76-69 victory over Connecticut College. Elias Espinosa and Dylan Watson scored 16 points each for Conn (5-5), while Cam Schainfeld chipped in 13. Dwayne Robinson O'Hagan led four RIC players in double figures with a game-high 19 points.
