Local roundup: Ledyard wrestling earns a second-place finish at Lancer Invitational

Waterford — Lukas Boxley won the title at 120 pounds to lift the Ledyard High School wrestling team to a second-place finish Saturday at the Waterford Lancer Invitational. Boxley won by technical fall over Southington's Joseph Garafolo in the final. The Colonels also got runner-up finishes from Joseph Crader (132 pounds), Josiah Estriplet (138) and Ryan Taggart (175). Ledyard's Braxton Swanbeck won the tournament's fast fall award with five pins in a total of 10 minutes, 24 seconds. Norwich Free Academy got first-place finishes from Jackson Sorel, who won by major decision over Crader at 132, Edward Lavoie at 144 and Naim Wallace at 165 and a second-place finish from Savion Witherspoon at 150. Waterford's Lucas Gannotti won by major decision at 157 at the Lancers got runner-up finishes from Braeden Sollima at 215 and Cooper Myers at 285. Griswold/Wheeler got runner-up finishes from Zakry Coffey at 113, Seth Christie at 126, Russell Stewart at 165 and Michael Capalbo at 190. Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech's Lucas Judd was second at 157. Southington won the team title with 215 points, with Ledyard second at 207.5. Griswold/Wheeler (6th), NFA (7th), Waterford (8th) and Lyman/Windham Tech (9th) were all in the top 10 of the 15-team field. Aydin Schifino of East Providence, who won the championship at 126 pounds, was named Outstanding Wrestler. In other matches: • Lincoln Carlson was named Outstanding Wrestler, winning the title at 215 pounds, and East Lyme finished fourth of 16 teams at the Guilford Invitational. East Lyme had five champions, with Angel Stimson (113), Noah Caisse (120), Anthony Caisse (150) and Jonathan Harms (285) joining Carlson. Jacob Palermo finished fourth for the Vikings at 190 and Jacob Bookmiller fifth at 175. • Bacon Academy's Jameson Grant finished second at 120 pounds at the Plainville Invitational. Bacon was 14th in the tournament, which was won by Danbury with 269.5 points. • Montville/Plainfield 175-pounder Luke Chapman earned a pair of victories by pin as the Wolves lost to Canton (57-20) and Killingly (67-12). Against Canton, Adrian Adames added added a win by technical fall at 120 and Christian Hall won by decision at 132 for Montville (0-3). Boys' basketball • Griswold got off to a 14-5 lead after one quarter and defeated Wheeler 64-31, backed by four players in double figures. Aaden Cutter led the way with 13 points, eight assists and three steals for the Wolverines (2-0), while Kaiden Kazlauskus had 12 points and six rebounds, Nick Watters 12 points and Kolby Mills had 10 points and five rebounds. Zane Brewer scored 13 points for Wheeler (1-1). • Julian Rodegher's team-high 17 points and Troy Johnson's double-double lifted Bacon Academy to a season-opening 57-47 victory over Tourtellotte. Bacon was held without a field goal in the fourth quarter but made 12 of 19 from the free throw line to secure the victory. Tourtellotte got 30 points from Josh Carlson. • Elijah Cornell had 14 points for Stonington in a 54-42 victory over Plainfield. Brady O'Neil and Sean Durham added 10 points each for the Bears (1-1), who got off to a 23-7 lead after one quarter. • Josh Lavoie had 14 points and Keegan Johnston nine for NFA in a season-opening 56-45 victory over Woodstock Academy. • JJ Robinson scored 11 points for New London in a 44-40 loss to Bloomfield in the Spirit of Doc Classic at Trinity College. Troy McKelvin Jr. added eight points for the Whalers (2-1), which trailed 18-14 at halftime in what was a close game throughout. Jeff Acoff had 19 points for Bloomfield. • Mike Timpano scored 31 points for East Lyme in a 78-65 loss to Manchester. Luke Walsh added 15 points for the Vikings (0-2). Girls' basketball • Nyarah Dudley had 24 points, nine rebounds and three steals in New London's 53-36 victory over Ridgefield. Jazin Torres added 11 points and Jaidelis Rivera had 10 points, seven assists and seven steals for the Whalers (2-2). Joy Schneider added seven rebounds and Kymiyah Willis had five rebounds and two steals. • Jenny Lopez had a double-double with 11 points, 10 assists, three rebounds and three steals in Lyman Memorial's 48-44 loss to Hale-Ray. Phoebe Carpenter added 22 points, six rebounds, two assists and six blocked shots for Lyman (1-2) and Ayanna Dillman had 11 rebounds and three steals. Hale-Ray took its first lead toward the end of the fourth quarter against a short-handed Lyman roster. Boys' hockey • Nick Rembish (St. Bernard) tied the game with 8 seconds remaining in regulation and Ethan LoVetere (Bacon Academy) scored the game-winner in overtime as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles opened the season with a victory over Woodstock Academy. LoVetere scored twice for the Eagles, Wade Larson (East Lyme) scored the other goal and Will Sluggett (St. Bernard) finished with three assists. Tyler Field and Dante Gonzalez combined for the victory in goal. Girls' hockey • Wheeler senior Sophia Gouveia scored four goals, giving her seven on the season, to lead the Woodstock Academy co-op to a 5-1 victory Friday over Hand at the Northford Ice Rink. Gouveia scored a goal in each of the first two periods and two in the third, while Woodstock's Maci Corradi added the other goal. Stonington's Zi Qing Biondo and Woodstock's Ellary Sampson each had three assists and sophomore goalie Gen Nash of NFA made 10 saves in the win for Woodstock (3-1). College honors • Endicott men's soccer junior midfielder Tim Lynch, a Fitch High School graduate, was named to the United Soccer Coaches' Scholar All-America Second Team. A junior sport management major, Lynch boasts a cumulative grade-point average of 3.86. The 2024 Conference of New England Defensive Player of the Year and All-Region II Second Team selection, Lynch started in all 19 games. His efforts on the defensive side of the ball led to a league-best 16 goals against for the Gulls this season and 10 shutouts.
