High school roundup: Falcons top Danbury in CARE Challenge

Windsor — Xavier Goode had 23 points, five assists and four steals for the Fitch High School boys' basketball team in a 52-44 win over Danbury on the opening day of the CARE Challenge at Windsor High School. Killingly's Johnny Kazantzis finished with 29 points to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors, while Grasso's Julius Washington earned all-tournament honors and teammate Amais Thompson was named the Sportsmanship Award winner. Washington had 18 points and Joey Moore 12 points for Grasso (5-1). • Mike Timpano had 24 points in East Lyme's 59-51 victory over Woodstock Academy. Oliver Hibbard added 16 points for the Vikings (1-2). • Parker Spencer finished with 20 points, going 9-for-12 from the foul line, in Waterford's 50-44 victory over Berlin in the consolation game of the Artie Kohs Holiday Tournament at Xavier. Spencer also had six rebounds, three assists and four steals for the Lancers (1-2), while Matthew Shampine had 14 points, Darien Sherwood 10 points and Gabe Lombardi 10 rebounds. • Josh Lodyko finished with 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and five steals as Norwich Tech defeated Putnam 60-46. Leading 36-33, Norwich Tech (1-1) went on a 14-point run to pull away. The Warriors finished with 18 assists on 24 field goals, with Ryan Lillibridge leading the team with eight assists. Emerson Avery had 12 points and five rebounds and Collin Schulze added nine points and three assists in the victory. • Noah Cast finished with 32 points, including 15 points in the fourth quarter as Branford pulled away for a 76-58 victory over Wheeler in the Morgan School Holiday Tournament. Branford outscored Wheeler 29-14 in the fourth quarter. Zane Brewer had 21 points and nine rebounds for Wheeler (1-3) and Garrett Lenihan and Nate Mayne each had 10 points and four rebounds each. • Eddie Fiske scored 18 points for Old Lyme in a 69-48 loss to Ellington. Girls' basketball • Kanon Oharu had 11 points, three rebounds and four assists and Sybil Neary 10 points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal in Old Lyme's 45-35 victory over Westbrook in the Shoreline Conference. Olivia Kelly added eight points, 14 rebounds, five assists, five steals and a pair of blocked shots for Old Lyme (3-2, 2-2) and Abby O'Brien finished with eight points and five rebounds. • Abby Ulrich had 10 points and nine rebounds and Olivia Luurtsema 10 points and seven rebounds for Norwich Tech in a 46-41 loss to Bolton. Autumn Hanks added eight points, seven steals and six assists for the Warriors (1-3) and Tenley Stimson had seven points and nine rebounds. Sara Diehl had 14 points for Bolton. • Wheeler's Hayden Bresnan finished with 19 points and three steals in a 49-36 loss to Old Saybrook. Abby Butremovic contributed 10 points for the Lions (3-1). Wrestling • Lukas Boxley (120 pounds) and Ryan Taggart (175) had two pins each for Ledyard, which defeated Guilford 58-21 and lost to Foran 58-23. Jessica Dudley (106, 113) and Josiah Estriplet (138, 144) also had two wins each for the Colonels (2-1) and Talon Vanase (106), Joseph Crader (132), Logan Storz (150), Braxton Swanbeck (165) and Ephraim Medic (190) added pins in the win over Guilford. Gymnastics • Fitch's Kiely Voland won the floor exercise with a score of 8.75 in a meet featuring teanms from Valley Regional, Stonington, the Haddam-Killingworth/Old Saybrook/Westbrook cooperative team and individuals from Fitch and Mercy. Voland was third all-around (32.65) and Fitch's Emma Robinson was fourth (32.35). Valley won the meet with 127.35 points, followed by Stonington with 123.0 and the HK co-op with 119.5. Robinson was second on bars (8.45) and Stonington's Shay Burnside was third on beam (8.4).
