Local roundup: Shampine leads Waterford boys past Wheeler

North Stonington — Matt Shampine scored 19 points Friday night and the Waterford High School boys' basketball team won for the second time in as many days with a 55-36 victory over Wheeler. The Lancers (3-4), who rallied from 12 back in the final four minutes to defeat Montville on Thursday, led by nine at the half. Colby Sheehan had 16 points and 21 rebounds for Waterford. Nate Main led Wheeler (4-3) with 15 points, Zane Brewer scored 11 and Nate Mayne had five assists. In other games: • East Lyme withstood a late comeback by Montville to win 53-48. The Vikings led 48-34 going into the fourth quarter, but the Wolves held them scoreless for four minutes, cutting the margin to three before Karch Kaczor's free throws sealed the win. Tanner O'Brien led East Lyme (4-4) with 14 points, while Jaylon Raphael scored 16 for Montville (3-4). • Malakhi Saab had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Fitch past Ledyard 83-61. Si'kis Reels added 14 points, Calvin Sebastian 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Xavier Goode 12 points for the Falcons (6-1), who led 48-27 at halftime. Calvin Casavant had 14 points and nine rebounds for Ledyard (2-4) and Kavion Hubbard had 10 points. • Dashaun Phillips finished with 17 points in New London's 72-32 victory over Stonington. JJ Robinson added nine points for the Whalers (6-3), who had 10 players score. Aaron Vislosky had eight points for Stonington. • Ethan Graham scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the third period as Norwich Free Academy defeated Bacon Academy 50-35. The Wildcats (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak. Troy Johnson had 10 points for Bacon (4-3). • Eddie Fiske scored 20 points as Old Lyme beat Morgan 53-50 in a Shoreline Conference game. Colman Curtiss-Reardon had 13 points for the Wildcats (5-2, 4-1). • Julius Washington scored a season high 42 points and Grasso Tech defeated Ellis Tech 87-60. Joey Moore scored 15 points and Jordan Washington 10 points for the Eagles (8-2). • Christian Heritage defeated Williams 64-49. Robby Shay led the Blues (1-3) with 12 points while Henry Champagne scored 11 and Jadiel Thomas had 10. H.S. girls' basketball • Morgan used a 40-6 lead at halftime to defeat Old Lyme 61-15 in the Shoreline Conference. Olivia Kelly had six rebounds and two steals for the Wildcats (3-5, 2-5). • Bacon Academy led 35-10 at halftime and went on to beat Lyman Memorial 65-33 on Thursday. Skyelyn Schoen-Rene had 16 points and Katelyn Novak scored 14 for the Bobcats (7-1). Phoebe Carpenter had 13 points and Jenny Lopez had eight points, five assists and five rebounds for Lyman (1-5). • Ellis Tech defeated Grasso Tech 40-9. Giana Martinez scored five points for Grasso (0-6). H.S. girls' hockey • The Woodstock Academy co-op beat Masuk 2-0. Maci Corradi scored her third goal in two games and Wheeler's Sophia Gouveia had her team-best eighth of the season to lead the Cantaurs (5-4). NFA freshman goalie Josie Hatch recorded the shutout. H.S. gymnastics • NFA's Trinity Ambruso took all-around honors as the Wildcats beat East Lyme 136.7-125.4 in an ECC meet on Thursday. Ambruso scored 37.45 and won the bars (9.4), balance beam (9.65) and floor exercise (9.65). Allison Wojnar of NFA (2-2, 2-2) won the vault (9.0) and was second in all-round at 34.9. East Lyme (0-2, 0-2) was led by Sylvi Otter, who was third in all-around at 34.4. Men's basketball • Connecticut College opened play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with a 69-56 loss to Colby. Elias Espinosa led all scorers with 23 points for Conn (8-7, 0-1). Women's basketball • Santiago Dedos scored all nine of her points in the second half for Conn College in a 67-46 loss to Colby in the NESCAC opener for both teams. Colby opened the game with nine straight points and never trailed, led by a game-high 20 points from Kate Olenik. Charlotte Head and Catie Hurley added seven points each and combined for 11 rebounds for Conn (9-5, 0-1).
