Local roundup: Ledyard boys put in the extra effort, top Wheeler 48-44 in OT

Ledyard — Luke Shevlin had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Calvin Casavant 14 points and Amani Dudley had five of his 10 points in overtime Monday to lift the Ledyard High School boys' basketball team to a 48-44 victory over Wheeler. Zane Brewer had 17 points and Garrett Lenihan 10 for Wheeler (4-5), which led 18-15 at halftime and 32-30 after three quarters. The game was tied 40-40 after regulation. Ledyard is 3-4. In other games: • Dashaun Phillips had 20 points and five steals in New London's 74-45 win over Norwich Free Academy in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I. Jaxyn Beaudet and Amir Hall each added 13 points, Beaudet had 13 rebounds and three steals and JJ Robinson had eight assists for the Whalers (7-3, 2-1). Jamier Ford had eight points for NFA (3-4, 0-2). • Oliver Hibbard led the way with 29 points and East Lyme outscored Waterford 22-4 in the second quarter on the way to a 72-46 win. Mikey Timpano added 19 points for East Lyme (5-4). Matthew Shampine scored 17 points for Waterford (3-5), including five 3-pointers. • Eddie Fiske had 21 points in Old Lyme's 73-50 win over North Branford in the Shoreline Conference. Ryan Hill finished with 17 points for Old Lyme (6-2, 5-1) and Colman Curtiss-Reardon had 12. • Collin Schulze had 20 points, three steals and an assist in Norwich Tech's 57-43 loss to Coventry. Aidan Lewis added 11 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals for Norwich Tech (3-5) and Ryan Lillibridge had seven rebounds and three assists. Coventry outscored the Warriors 25-8 in the second quarter. H.S. girls' basketball • Sybil Neary had 20 points, 13 rebounds and three steals for Old Lyme, which came from behind to beat Montville 37-35 in a nonconference game. Jill Kleefeld had nine points and four rebounds for Old Lyme (4-5) and Olivia Kelly had six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Jada Cheung finished with 16 points for Montville (3-5), which led 27-19 at halftime. • Elle Reid (12 points) and Kate van Berkel (10) each scored in double figures for The Williams School in a 32-28 victory over Christian Heritage, giving the Blue a 2-0 win in the season series. Anne Gingras scored two 3-pointers to start the game for Williams and finished with eight points. College honors • For the sixth time this season, UConn women's basketball forward Sarah Strong was named the Big East Conference Freshman of the Week. Strong averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game in two wins last week. Against Xavier, Strong scored 15 points and added seven rebounds and five steals. In a win over Georgetown, she notched 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals and tied her personal best with six assists. Strong has scored in double digits in all 17 games. She leads the Huskies in rebounding, blocks and steals and is second in scoring and assists. Graduate student Azzi Fudd was named to the weekly honor roll after averaging 22.0 points per game and shooting 63% percent from the floor and 61.5% from 3. Sixth-ranked UConn is back on the road at St. John's at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
