Local roundup: Stonington tops Montville in ECC Div. III boys' basketball

Montville — Sean Durham scored 16 points to lead Stonington to a 52-42 win over Montville in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III boys' basketball game on Monday night. Alex Nowak had 11 points for the Bears (7-6, 3-0). Jace Kobyluck scored 25 points for Montville (5-7, 1-3). In other games: • Ledyard had 31 steals in a 92-54 win over Bacon Academy in an ECC Division III game. Cam Weber had 18 points, Amani Dudley scored 17, Josh Leaf scored 16 and Kavion Hubbard had 15 points for the Colonels (5-7, 3-1). Bacon is 4-8, 0-4. • JJ Robinson scored 22 points as New London beat East Lyme 61-49b in an ECC Division I game. Jaxyn Beaudet had 11 points and 12 rebounds, Dashaun Phillips scored 14 and Savahn Warren had six rebounds, four steals and five assists for the Whalers (10-3, 3-1). Oliver Hibbard had 23 points and Michael Timpano scored 10 for the Vikings (6-8, 0-4). • Five players scored in double figures for Grasso Tech in a 101-32 win over Parish Hill. Zamir Foy had 15 points, six steals and 10 rebounds, Julius Washington scored 15, Jordan Washington scored 13, Amais Thompson had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Lachlan Singer-Johnson scored 10 and Ryan Gemaly had six assists for the Eagles (12-2). • Josh Carlson scored 28 points to lead Tourtellotte to a 55-53 win over Wheeler in an ECC Division IV game. Zane Brewer had 25 points and Brodey Pappas scored 2 for Wheeler (5-8, 3-1). • Waterford squandered an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter, losing to Morgan 59-56 in a nonleague game. Parker Spencer scored with 21 points, Matthew Shampine had 18 points and Colby Sheehan had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Lancers (5-7). Dylan Cinquino and Griffin Ranaudo had 15 points apiece for Morgan. H.S. girls' basketball • Montville beat Wheeler 41-32. Jada Cheung scored 18 for Montville (5-8). Zoe Browne had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Molly Perkins had seven points and 10 rebounds for Wheeler (10-4). • Norwich Tech beat Tourtellotte 43-24 in a nonleague game. Olivia Luurtsema scored 18 points, had five rebounds and four steals and Abby Ulrich had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors (5-7). • Grasso Tech lost to Harding 29-16 in a nonleague game. Emma Pavlah led Grasso (0-10) with six points. H.S. gymnastics • Killingly swept a quad-meet with a score of 132.65. Woodstock Academy scored 130.85, East Lyme had 125.35 and Old Lyme scored 40.45. Ella Perreira of Killingly (5-3, 5-3) won all-around with a score of 35.45 and won the vault (9.3) and beam (9.45). Sylvi Otter of East Lyme (3-4-1, 0-4) was second in all-around (34.1) and won the bars (8.6). Anyah Oatley of Woodstock (5-3, 5-3) was third at 33.75 and Killingly's Jessie Williams won floor exercise (9.1). H.S. girls' wrestling • Windham had a pair of second-place finishers on Sunday at the Queen of the Hill at Rocky Hill. Amity won the team title, Windham was eighth and NFA finished 12th. The Whippets got second place finishes from Giselle Gonzalez Aleluya at 107 pounds and Idalia Lopez at 138. NFA's Tiyana Taylor was third at 235 and teammate Angelica Marin Reyes finished fourth at 120. Strong sweeps Big East awards • For the third time this season, UConn women's basketball forward Sarah Strong was named both the Big East Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday. Strong led the Huskies to two wins last week while averaging 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2.5 blocks and 3.5 steals per game. Against Villanova, Strong led UConn with 22 points while adding four rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Strong shot 8-for-10 vs. the Wildcats. At Creighton, Strong led the Huskies with 26 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She also had three assists, four blocks and five steals. Strong is the sixth player in league history to win both conference honors in the same week and just the third player to sweep the weekly honors multiple times. Rizzotti honored • Connecticut Sun President Jennifer Rizzotti was recently named 2024 co-Coach of the Year for 3x3 Basketball. Rizzotti, the coach of the USA women's team at the Olympic Games in Paris. She shares the honor with USA men's coach Joe Lewandowski. The women's tam finished third.
