Local roundup: Brewer leads Wheeler boys to regular-season title in ECC Division IV

North Stonington — Zane Brewer led the way with 31 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Wheeler High School boys' basketball team defeated Tourtellotte 67-42 Tuesday night to decide the regular-season championship for Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV. Garrett Lenihan and Nate Mayne added 13 points each for Wheeler, which finished the regular season 9-11 overall, 7-1 in the division. Josh Carlson had 21 points for Tourtellotte, which is 13-7 overall, 6-2 in the conference. Both teams started the night 6-1 in Division IV. Wheeler led 28-18 at halftime before outscoring Tourtellotte 19-11 in the third quarter. In other games: • Amani Dudley had 32 points, eight rebounds and four assists in Ledyard's 83-51 victory over Bacon Academy in ECC Division III. Jack Lear added 18 points for Ledyard (10-10, 5-3) and Kavion Hubbard had 13. The Colonels finished with 10 3-point field goals, including four by Dudley and three by Hubbard. Troy Johnson had 18 points and Jack Heigl 11 for Bacon (6-14, 0-8). • Elijah Cornell had 23 points, four rebounds and three steals for Stonington in a 56-53 win over Montville in ECC Division III. Sean Durham added 10 points, Jace Wolfradt nine rebounds and Brady O'Neil seven assists for the Bears (13-7, 6-2). Jace Kobyluck had 17 points and Jace Cheung 13 for Montville (9-11, 2-6). H.S. girls' basketball • Lucy Walker had 12 points and Jennie Macca-Barnes six points and eight rebounds as ninth-seeded Waterford defeated No. 8 Killingly 34-28 in the first round of the ECC Division I tournament. Waterford (7-14) will play at No. 1 Bacon Academy in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Ariahna Headen had nine points for Killingly. • Jada Cheung had 20 points and Kayla Terni 13 as Montville defeated Portland 46-44. Montville (9-12), the No. 7 seed in this week's ECC Division II tournament, will play at No. 2 Wheeler at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinal round. H.S. track & field • Fitch had a pair of second-place finishers in the Class L track & field championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center. Bethany Lovering was second in the girls' shot put with a toss of 34 feet, 10.5 inches and Jacob Smith was the runner-up in the boys' high jump with a leap of 6-0. Also for the girls, who finished 10th with 14 points, Sydney Post was third in the high jump (4-10) and Valerie Codd was sixth in the 55-meter dash (7.54). Among the boys, who were 11th in the team standings with 15 points, Shea Cahill was fifth in the 1,000 (2:42.54), Evan Vitagliano fifth in the 600 (1:25.79) and James Logan and Casey Gilmore fifth and sixth in the pole vault, each with a leap of 12-0. Windsor won the girls' title with 93 points, while Xavier took the boys' title with 88. H.S. swimming • Ed Morcos was first in the 200 freestyle (2:00.43) and the 100 freestyle (53.66) for East Lyme/NFA in a 93-69 victory over West Haven. Morcos also led the Vikings' 200 freestyle relay team to a win in 1:43.24, joined by Albert Zhu, Ian Liu and Ben Morales. Zhu (100 butterfly) and Connor Foerster (50 freestyle) picked up victories, as well, for East Lyme/NFA (4-5). H.S. gymnastics • Ellington/Tolland defeated Stonington 135.4-126.9 on Monday, with athletes from Fitch and the Ledyard cooperative team also competing. Ledyard's Alyssa McLeod took the uneven bars with a 9.4. In the all-around, Fitch's Kiely Voland was third (33.4), Stonington's Mary Lord fourth (33.05) and Fitch's Emma Robinson sixth (32.25). Ellington/Tolland's Kaitlyn Delaney won the all-around with a score of 35.55. Sun to face Storm in preseason • The Connecticut Sun will play a preseason game against the Seattle Storm at 6 p.m. May 4 in Seattle, the Sun announced Tuesday. This will be the Sun's first test under first-year head coach Rachid Meziane. Dating back to the 2015 season, the Sun are 17-3 in preseason games. Details of additional preseason games for the Sun will be announced at a later date. The Sun tip off the regular season at home on May 18, facing the Washington Mystics. UConn football hires Tracy • UConn head football coach Jim Mora announced the addition of Pryce Tracy to the coaching staff for 2025, as Tracy joins the Huskies as the team's passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Tracy comes to Storrs after spending the last three seasons at Georgia, where he was assistant tight ends coach. He was a part of coach Kirby Smart's staff that helped lead the Bulldogs to College Football Playoff appearances in 2022 and 2024. He was a part of three straight SEC Championship game appearances and the 2022 and 2024 SEC titles. College honors • The Conn College field hockey team earned the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division III National Academic Team Award, which goes to progranms which have earned a 3.5 grade-point average or better. The Camels, who earned the award for the 11th straight year, posted a 3.7 GPA last semester.
