High school roundup: Bears go 5-for-5 in PK round to beat Windham in Class M tourney

Willimantic — Sal Alessio, Landon Pelletier, Ethan Cabrera, Jace Wolfradt and Chase Donnarummo all converted penalty kicks for the Stonington High School boys' soccer team Saturday as the No. 18 Bears edged No. 15 Windham 1-0 in penalty kicks in the first round of the Class M state tournament.Stonington won the penalty-kick round 5-4 after two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, with Bears' goalie Nick Cannella saving the second kick from Windham to help clinch the victory.Cannella also saved a breakaway in regulation for the Bears, who move on to face No. 2 Seymour in the second round Tuesday.In other games:• No. 8 Waterford scored all five goals in the first 15 minutes of the game and went on to beat No. 25 Foran 5-1 in the first round of the Class M state tournament. Ian Rush scored three times for the Lancers (10-4-4) and Matthew Shampine had one goal and three assists. Waterford will play a second-round game at 4 p.m. Tuesday against No. 24 Weston.• No. 12 New London lost to No. 21 Law 4-1 in the first round of the Class L tournament. Jorge Almendarez scored a goal and Niko Churis had an assist for the Whalers (10-6-3).Girls' soccer• Finn O'Keefe and Madison Hubbard each had two goals Friday as No. 13 Stonington blanked No. 20 Oxford 5-0 in the first round of the Class M state tournament. Maya Terwilliger had a goal and Eva Terwilliger had two assists for the Bears (12-6), who outshot Oxford 24-0. Stonington will face No. 4 Lewis Mills in the second round Monday.• Morgan Riley and Lauren Glaza had goals for No. 23 Wheeler in a 9-2 loss to No. 10 Valley Regional in the opening round of the Class S state tournament on Friday. Riley scored unassisted on a long-distance shot and Glaza capitalized on a penalty kick for Wheeler, which finished the season 6-9-2.Football• Devin Cook ran for touchdowns of 80 and 8 yards, finishing with 15 carries for 142 yards in Fitch's 22-21 win Friday over previously unbeaten Windham. Windham (6-1) led 7-0 before Fitch (4-3) scored twice in the second quarter to make it 16-7, getting an 11-yard touchdown pass from Porter Carter to Zyree Williams-Brown and Cook's 80-yard touchdown run. Carter ran for one two-point conversion and threw to Sean Bussey for another. Williams-Brown finished with 90 yards rushing and Bussey had 13 tackles, including two sacks.• Jack Philistin threw for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns and Demitrias Fletcher rushed for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns in New London's 32-6 victory Friday over Ledyard. Tyree Barnes, Cayden Simonds-Gaskin and Makiye Horward each had a touchdown catch and Barnes added eight tackles for New London (4-3). Ledyard is 4-3.
