Memorial Day Parade in Norwich coming May 26 The Norwich Area Veterans Council Memorial Day Parade will kick off at noon Monday, May 26, in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral (213 Broadway), Norwich. The parade continues down Broadway to the Monument Area of Chelsea Parade. The Memorial Ceremony will start immediately after the parade at approximately 1 p.m. at Chelsea Parade (across from NFA). The parade is organized by the Norwich Area Veterans Council, the City of Norwich, and the Greater Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce. East Lyme will host two Memorial Day events Memorial Day weekend events in East Lyme will include a candlelight vigil and the annual parade. The vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 25, on the town Green, or at the American Legion post on York Avenue in case of rain. The parade is planned at 2 p.m. Monday, May 26. It will start on Main Street and Columbus Avenue, proceeding to the Town Hall on Pennsylvania Avenue, held rain or shine. Cat shelter to hold fundraiser May 24 Kitty Harbor cat shelter at 2263 Glasgo Road (Route 201), Griswold, will be holding its annual Yard Sale on Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Craft vendors will be on site, as well as the annual bake sale. Alzheimer's journey will be explored by local author May 20 Masonicare at Mystic will host local author and journalist Colleen Kelly Mellor on Tuesday, May 20, from 3 to 4:00 p.m. Mellor will share excerpts from her book, "Az and Me: A Partner's Journey with Alzheimer's," and will offer insights and resources for those acting as caregivers and partners to people living with dementia, particularly Alzheimer's. Walkathon at Clark Lane to be held on May 23 Clark Lane Middle School will hold its annual walkathon May 23 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. All students walk for three causes, raising money for each charity. Last year, $42,000 was raised. Nightingales announces performance is canceled The live music performance of Kelly Riley/Lisa Arnaci at Nightingale's Acoustic Cafe, 68 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, has been canceled for May 24 and will be rescheduled. Sub vet memorial service to be held May 26 U.S. Submarine Veterans Groton Base will hold a memorial service at 11 a.m. May 26 at the U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII National Memorial East, located on Bridge Street and Thames Street. The Memorial Service will recognize all U.S. submarines that have been lost and all crewmembers lost onboard USS Scorpion (SSN 589) in May 1968 with a Tolling of the Boats. The guest speaker will be the Commanding Officer of the Naval Submarine Base, Capt. Kenneth M. Curtin. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved indoors at the Groton City Municipal Building, 295 Meridian St., Groton. Norwich Women's City Club meeting May 20 The Norwich Women's City Club is celebrating International Tea Day at its May 20 meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the Norwich Senior Center on Mahan Drive. Amanda Croacker from Mandi Tea House will be the speaker. She will share some tea cultures with many period and modern stories from her travels around the world. Hyman Rickover talk set for May 28 in Waterford On Wednesday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m., Waterford Library welcomes Petty Officer Austin German from The Submarine Force Museum in Groton to speak on Adm. Union Baptist tag sale to be held May 30-31 in Mystic Union Baptist Church, at 119 High St. in Mystic, will hold a tag sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 30-31. The sale includes clothing for men, women and children along with collectibles, toys, books and assorted housewares. Proceeds of the sale will benefit local charities. Music Heals Coffeehouse to be held May 30-31 Artreach Inc. will present its Music Heals Coffeehouse on Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, at 7:30 p.m. The live musical performances will take place at Chestnut Street Playhouse at 24 Chestnut St., Norwich. Woodland Ramble returning May 31 in Mystic The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center announced the return of Mr. Bill's Woodland Ramble, a 5k walk/run through the scenic trails of the Nature Center, taking place on Saturday, May 31. Check-in begins at 9 a.m., and the Ramble kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Following the Ramble, there will be appearances by DPNC's Animal Ambassadors: rehabilitated animals, including birds of prey, that help educate the public about wildlife. Authors' journeys will be explored June 4 Waterford Public Library will host a free program at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, on Authors and their Journeys, highlighting Nicholas Checker's journeys as a writer, and the paths taken to finally attain publication or production. This will include a theatrical reading of a Memorial Day-themed short story, "Hungry Headstones," as well as a brief passage from his forthcoming new young adult novelette, "The Duel," soon to be released via a traditional publishing house, The Wild Rose Press, in New York. Fellow writers will be encouraged to seek their own paths to publication, and will be invited to share their experiences in the field. Summer Sounds holding Mystic River concerts The Noank-Mystic Community Band will present the 28th annual Summer Sounds concert series in Mystic River Park, Cottrell Street, Mystic (by the drawbridge) on Tuesday evenings at 7. The concerts, which feature a different community music group each week, will run from June 10 to Aug. 5, with a special finale date of Wednesday, Aug. 6. Admission to all concerts is free, picnics welcome. New London seeks Veterans Advisory members The City of New London is looking for new members to serve on the Veterans Advisory Committee. The committee acts as the coordinating agency in all matters concerning veterans and their dependents.
