Local college notes: Killingly's Yaworski brothers play key roles for their college baseball teams

Around the region • Graduate student Hunter Yaworski (Killingly, Mitchell College) helped the Salve Regina University baseball team capture the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference championship and earn an NCAA Division III tournament bid. He's batting .333 with four home runs and 28 RBI for the 10th-ranked Seahawks (32-7), who beat MIT, 6-5, in 10 innings in the title game on Sunday. Hunter's brother Bo Yaworski (Killingly, Mitchell) is a starting first baseman for the Central Connecticut State University baseball team. Through 37 games, he's batting .348 with two home runs and ranks second on the team with 43 RBI. With three regular season games to go, the Blue Devils (27-12) are in second place in the Northeast Conference with a 22-5 league mark. • Stonehill College junior Jordan Malloy (Bacon Academy) set a personal best in the 1,500 meters at the New England Championships Saturday at UMass. Malloy finished third out of 31 runners in a time of four minutes. 29.99 seconds. • Smith College senior Serena Britner (St. Bernard) ran the lead-off leg for the 4x800 relay team that set a school record of 9:23.86 and finished fourth at the recent Division III New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The quartet earned All-Region honors. • Worcester State University's Abbie Wing (Griswold) capped her senior lacrosse season with career highs in goals (56), assists (14) and points (70). WSU finished 13-7 overall, won the MASCAC tournament title and lost to Babson College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. • Junior Jake Kozlowski (Waterford) is a reserve goalie for the Colgate men's lacrosse team. Colgate won the Patriot League Championship and lost to Penn State, 13-11, in NCAA Division I tournament first round action. • Sophomore Charles Taylor V (Montville), a reserve long stick midfielder, helped Rivier College (17-2) win its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse title and advance to the NCAA Division III tournament. Rivier beat Maine Maritime, 20-10, in first round round action before falling to No. 8 Bowdoin on Saturday. Taylor appeared in eight games this season. • Sophomore Cam Elenteny (Stonington) scored seven goals and added nine assists in 17 games this season for the Trinity College men's lacrosse team. Elenteny had an assist in a 13-6 win over Farmingdale College on Wednesday in NCAA Division III tournament first round play. • Dylan Freyer (Griswold), a sophomore defender, appeared in 20 games for the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team and scored one goal. Ohio Northern finished 16-5 overall, won its first Ohio Athletic Conference championship and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. • Graduate student Molly Bresnahan (Fitch), the Little East Conference goalie of the year, made 12 saves in the Western Connecticut State University's NCAA Division III first round win over Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. Then WCSU (17-3) lost to Rowan University, 20-5, on Sunday. Bresnahan finished the season with career highs in saves (182) and wins (15). • Pitcher Sophia DiCocco (Norwich Free Academy) helped the Tufts softball team qualify for the NCAA Division III tournament after beating Wesleyan, 8-3, in the New England Small College Athletic Conference title game on Sunday. DiCocco earned the win in a 6-4 victory over Colby in the semifinals earlier in the day. • Junior Evan McCue (Waterford) is heading to the NCAA Division III baseball tournament with the Keene State baseball team. McCue walked and scored a run in Keene's 2-1 win over Eastern Connecticut in the Little East championship game on Sunday. Keene (25-15) will play Salve Regina in NCAA first round action on Friday in Middletown, Pa. McCue is one of the top offensive players on the team, batting .348 with two home runs and 29 RBI. • Abby Robinson (East Lyme) is a freshman pitcher for the Springfield softball team that qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament. Robinson has appeared in 10 games, posting a 6-1 record with a 2.75 earned run average. • Sophomore Grace Jenkins (Marine Science Magnet School) of Groton went 3 for 6 in the Southern New Hampshire University softball team's three NCAA Division II tournament games last week. Jenkins finished the season with a .276 batting average with one home run and 24 RBI in 45 games • Catcher Melanie Martin (Waterford) and pitcher Hailey Smith (NFA) saw limited action in their freshmen seasons playing for the University of Bridgeport softball team that reached the NCAA Division II tournament and went 33-16 overall. Mariners riding a wave • The Mitchell College baseball season ended with consecutive losses in the GNAC best-of-three championship series at Johnson & Wales University. Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London) had a stellar season, leading the Mariners (25-18) in batting average (.379) and finishing second in home runs (seven) and tying for second in RBI (38) and home runs (seven). Michael Ficocelli had a team-best 40 RBI and batted .337 while Chas Terni Jr. (Montville) topped the team in home runs with 11 and added 38 RBI. Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme) ranked first in earned run average (.233), wins (eight) and strikeouts (87) in 13 appearances. Tracking the Bears • The Coast Guard Academy baseball team fell short in its quest to win the NEWMAC tournament championship last weekend. The Bears finished with a program best 26 victories. Carson Cho (66 hits, 46 runs, 17 doubles) and Rick Barkley (10 home runs) set singles season records while Barkley established program career marks in homers (26) and RBI (97). • Senior captains Natalie Beck and Veronica Krystofik (Bacon Academy) saw their softball careers end with a 4-3 loss to Wheaton College in the NEWMAC losers' bracket on Thursday. Beck appeared in 139 career games, starting 134.
