Local roundup: Mooney takes Big East decathlon title with second-best score in UConn history

Storrs — UConn sophomore Josh Mooney, a 2023 Stonington High School graduate, won the Big East Conference decathlon championship Friday with 7,810 points, the second-best decathlon score in program history. Mooney won the 100 meters (10.73 seconds) and long jump (22-10), was second in the high jump (6-4.25) and shot put (41-9.75) and fourth in the 400 (50.09) on Thursday, leading the competition after Day 1 with 3,936 points. On Friday, he was first in the 110 hurdles (14.30) — an event in which he won a national championship while at Stonington — first in the discus (136-11), pole vault (15-1) and javelin (234-05) and sixth in the 1,500 meters (5:04.10). Mooney was the two-time CIAC decathlon champion at Stonington. He will compete in the men's javelin competition Saturday. UConn leads the men's team standings after seven of 22 events with 119 points, looking for its fifth straight title, and is first in the women's team standings with 109.5. The women are vying for their fourth straight championship. H.S. boys' tennis • Montville defeated Ledyard 5-2 to capture the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II championship. Danny Zhong, Jack Bowman and Ryan Hochdorfer won in singles for the Wolves (9-4 overall, 5-0 in the division). Ledyard got a win at No. 1 singles from Malloch Allison. The Colonels are 5-7, 2-3. • Stonington defeated Newington 7-0 behind singles wins from Brady O'Neil, Chase Donnarummo, Sam Lund and Sean Lord. The Bears are 12-2 overall. • Ledyard lost to Woodstock Academy 4-3 in an ECC Division II match on Thursday night. Malloch Allison won at No. 1 singles for the Colonels (5-6, 2-2). The doubles teams of Hendrick Trieu-Luke Anderson and Wesley Martelle-Hunter DiVincenzo also won for Ledyard. H.S. girls' tennis • Montville defeated Ledyard 4-3. Anna Beauchene, Allie Kondash, Jess Hochdorfer and Kelly Chen won singles for the Wolves (8-5). Ledyard is 5-9. • East Lyme defeated Fitch 7-0 in ECC Division I. Valentina Schiano, Mila Lovering, Jessica Feng and Penny Lin won in singles for East Lyme (10-2, 3-2). H.S. boys' golf • Woodstock Academy defeated Stonington 6-1. Seamus Doyle led the Bears (2-6-1) with a 38. • Tyler Hollis shot 38 and Marcus Lisee shot 39 as Norwich Free Academy defeated East Lyme 5-2 to capture the ECC Division I regular-season title. The Wildcats are 11-0 overall, 4-0 in the division. East Lyme's Sebby DeCosta shared medalist honors with Hollis, also firing a 38. The Vikings are 9-3, 2-2. H.S. girls' lacrosse • Sophia Gouveia scored seven goals and Wheeler defeated Woodstock Academy 15-11. Ava Gentes scored four goals for the Lions (10-4). • Riley Ritchotte scored five goals as Killingly beat Griswold/Norwich Tech 9-5 on Thursday night. Morgan Blanchard had three goals and Morgan Deojay scored a goal for Killingly (2-12). Amelia Hawkins had two goals and an assist, Tess Marchand had a goal and an assist and Sienna Caron and Ella Brown each had a goal for the Wolverines (1-14). H.S. boys' track • Deshawn Chapman won four events as Windham beat Griswold 79-71 on Thursday to wrap up the ECC Division III title. Chapman won the 110 hurdles (17.5), 300 hurdles (44.7), long jump (21-1) and triple jump (41-5) for the Whippets (5-0, 4-0). Tycen LaBelle, Matthew Perea and Brenden Hopkins won two events each for Griswold (6-1, 3-1) and Jadyn Alvarado and Sean Silva also won events. H.S. girls' track • Windham beat Griswold 96-51 in an ECC Division III meet on Thursday. Angelea Christie won the 100 (12.4), 200 (26.9) and triple jump (35-1) for the Whippets (4-1, 3-1) and Asijha Harris, Cassidy O'Connor and Jaida Green won two events each. Lana Holeman won two events for Griswold (3-4, 1-3) and Ryley Hubert, Felicitas Dietz and Sophia Wooten also won events.
