Local roundup: Main strikes out 18 as Wheeler baseball earns ECC Division IV title

Plainfield — James Main pitched a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts and Wheeler High School captured the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV baseball championship with a 6-0 victory over Plainfield on Saturday. Korbin Anderson had a single, double, two walks and a run scored for the Lions (8-6, 5-1) and Mason Perkins also had two hits. Jace Arriaga had the only hit for Plainfield (3-13, 2-3). In other games: • Antonio Durand's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Norwich Tech to a 6-5 win over Grasso Tech in a Connecticut Technical Conference game at Dodd Stadium. Derek Barber drove in two runs and John Mastorakis and Cole Arnio had two hits each for the Warriors (9-7), who are closing in on the CTC title. PJ Evans had four hits for Grasso (9-8) and and Yancarlos De La Cruz-Nieves doubled. Grasso lost to Old Saybrook 5-3 on Friday. De La Cruz-Nieves had three hits. • Daimon Flax pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out nine, in Fitch's 4-0 win over Old Lyme. Dom Zuliani had two hits for Fitch (6-11) and Nick Logan had a hit and scored twice. Old Lyme is 9-9. H.S. softball • Norwich Free Academy's Olivia Bourdon pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 11, and homered twice with five RBI in the Wildcats' 14-0 victory over Woodstock Academy. Autumn Romains was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Brooke Stringer had two hits and an RBI for NFA. The Wildcats (14-4) followed that with a 4-0 loss to fourth-ranked Amity in the second game of a doubleheader. Dakota Bourdon struck out nine for NFA in the loss and Aubrey Martin and Olivia Bourdon each had hits. Morgan Luddy hit a solo homer for Amity and Leah Monschein had two hits for the Spartans. • Killingly scored twice in the top of the seventh and held on for a 4-3 victory over St. Bernard. Kylie Anderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Killingly (9-7) and Jayden Durand had a home run and two RBI. Lena Byers had a double and a run scored for St. Bernard (9-9) and Annabelle Wenzel and Keira Davilla each had an RBI. • Michaela Miner was 3-for-5 with a double, triple, four RBI and two runs scored in Stonington's 12-2 defeat of Plainfield. Ari Scavello (home run), Ainslie Zagol and Mason Zagol had two hits each for the Bears (10-4), who scored five runs in the second inning, and Lindsey Houle pitched a four-hitter, getting the benefit of a pair of double plays. Plainfield is 7-9. • Immaculate took the lead with four runs in the sixth inning and held on to beat East Lyme 8-5. Lorelei Gronholm had a two-run home run and Natalie Knowlton a two-run triple for East Lyme (4-13). • Montville scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Wheeler 17-5 in six innings. Montville is 10-7. Chloe Sanders had three hits, two RBI and two runs for Wheeler (9-7) and Isabella Deledda and Addie Stanley added two hits each. H.S. boys' tennis • Fitch celebrated Senior Day with a 5-2 victory over Old Lyme, getting victories from seniors Will Albrikes at No. 1 singles and Evan Whitten at No. 3 singles. Michael Petropoulos also had a singles win for the Falcons (9-6), who added doubles wins from Luc Nickerson and Lawrence Balsley and Jeffrey Hipsky. Old Lyme (6-8) got wins from Micah Bass at No. 2 singles and from the No. 2 doubles team of Oliver Wyman and Ryan Miller. H.S. girls' tennis • Montville finished the ECC Division III portion of its schedule unbeaten at 8-0 with 7-0 victory over New London. Anna Beauchene, Allie Kondash, Jess Hochdorfer and Kelly Chen won singles matches for the Wolves (9-5), who also got doubles wins from the teams of Angilina Liu and Kaylee Nelson, Ruth Prado and Emilia Funk and Karina Liu and Carolyn Barbosa. • On Friday, St. Bernard topped New London 6-1. St. Bernard got singles wins from Blake Murray, Paige Daley and Yoyee Chen, while New London's Ariana Taveras picked up a victory at No. 4 singles. H.S. track • Old Lyme had two individual winners at the 27-team A Night of Speed at Coginchaug on Friday night. Patrick Lynch won the boys' long jump at 22 feet and Zoe Eastman-Grossel won the girls' 400 meters in a time of 56.95. Jonah Korinek of Stonington was also a winner, taking the pole vault at 12-6. Old Lyme's team of Chase Gilbert, Serena Mazzi, Maia Guisti and Eastman-Grossel was second in the girls' 4x400 relay at 4:08.33. Stonington's team of Payton Linicus, Landon Pelletier, Molly Musselman and Hagen Drake were second in the mixed 4x400 at 3:43.45. College track • UConn sophomore Josh Mooney of Stonington was second in the javelin at Saturday's Big East championship with a throw of 196-8, as UConn swept the men's and women's team titles. The UConn men won with 298 points and the women matched the championship with 206.5 points. Mooney won the two-day decathlon event on Thursday and Friday with a career-best 7,810 points.
