H.S. baseball/softball roundup: McElwee comes through in the clutch for Montville

New London — Andrew McElwee struck out the final batter of the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the save for the Montville High School baseball team in a 4-1 victory over New London. Chase Malbaurn scattered eight hits over 6.2 innings to earn the win for the Wolves (16-3), striking out four, and Hunter Sylvia and Rich Beyer had RBI singles. Juan Santiago pitched 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts for New London (9-7) and Javy Gonzalez had two hits. In other games: • Ryan Wargo drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning for East Lyme and the Vikings held on for a 4-3 victory over Old Lyme. Nick Cambi had a double and a triple for East Lyme (14-4), Tanner O'Brien was 2-for-3 with a double and Garrison Biggs earned the win with two innings of relief. Ben Frazier and Rowen Meisner had doubles for Old Lyme (3-15), which scored twice in the first inning. East Lyme took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fourth but the Wildcats tied it with one in the fifth. • Stonington scored in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 4-3 Senior Night victory over Fitch. Jacob Schrage pitched six scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Bears (15-3), allowing just two hits, and Grayson Dull had two hits and two RBI. Thomas Rogers and Griffin Pollard had two hits each for Fitch (6-12). • JT Eisenberg pitched five innings, allowing four hits and striking out five, as Bacon Academy defeated Plainfield 8-1. Eli Chiaverini went 2-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases and three RBI for Bacon (13-6). Brayden Johnson had a hit and a run scored for Plainfield (3-14). • Noah Klewin had a single, double and two RBI and Mason Perkins had a home run and three RBI for Wheeler in a 14-3 defeat of Grasso Tech in five innings. James Main and Jeremy Vetelino added two RBI each for the Lions (9-6), who drew 11 walks. Raymer Guzman tripled for Grasso Tech (9-9). • Carson Luther had two hits and two runs scored for Ledyard in a 6-1 victory over Putnam/Tourtellotte. Cameron Weber and Tyler Spinner each added two RBI for the Colonels (7-11) and Aiden Oliver earned the win in relief. Putnam/Tourtellotte is 3-14. • Coventry's Zach Johnson pitched a one-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Lyman Memorial in six innings. Bradey Turbes had the only hit for Lyman (6-12). Softball • Kaitlyn Scribner pitched a two-hit shutout and added a double for St. Bernard in a 3-0 victory over Woodstock Academy. Aubree Nygaard had a double, home run, RBI and a run scored for St. Bernard (10-9), while Olivia Kane and Anabelle Wenzel also had two hits each. The Saints scored twice in the top of the first. • Emma Van Dusen had a pair of doubles and drove in four runs as East Lyme beat Morgan 23-2. Lauryn Drago and Jill Hintze combined to pitch a three-hitter for the Vikings. • Riley Stolzman pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine, as Bacon Academy defeated Griswold 4-1 in ECC Division III. Reina Hill went 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI for Bacon (6-11, 3-4). Summer McClean had a hit and scored a run for Griswold (9-7, 5-3). • Maya Stimson allowed three hits and struck out 13 in Norwich Tech's 14-2 victory over Putnam. Nyomi Barboza had two home runs, three RBI and four runs scored for the Warriors (13-5), while Autumn Hanks was 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored and Diana Kozerefski had three hits and three RBI. Putnam is 5-12. • Avery Goiangas had a single and a double and Avery Zbierski a two-run triple for Old Lyme in a 10-3 loss to Haddam-Killingworth. Sybil Neary struck out six, making her season debut on the mound for the Wildcats (10-8, 9-7). • Chariho took advantage of Stonington errors to beat the Bears 14-0. Mason Zagol, Hana Lyon and Janiya Aleman each had hits for Stonington (10-5). • Jadelise Garrett had a single and a double for New London in a 20-2 loss to Ellis Tech in five innings. Hayden Bogue and Kaliegh Williams each added a hit and a run scored for the Whalers (0-16).
