Local roundup: Griswold volleyball takes 18th straight, advances to ECC DI semis

Griswold — Abby Matheson had 16 kills and 14 digs and Kierra Neilson 10 kills, 10 blocks, four digs and an ace, as the two senior hitters led the third-seeded Griswold High School volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 win over No. 6 Norwich Free Academy on Friday in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I tournament quarterfinals.It was the 18th straight victory for Griswold (19-2), which advanced to Monday's semifinals to meet No. 2 Woodstock Academy.Bella Bruno added 28 assists, seven digs, three aces and two kills for the Wolverines and Carly Rubino had 13 digs. Evelina Klyukein had seven kills and 12 digs for NFA (8-12), Sophie Miner 14 digs and two kills, Layra Silva nine digs and Savannah Guernsey 15 assists.The ECC Division I semifinals will be played Monday at Waterford, with Woodstock facing Griswold at 4:30 p.m., followed by No. 1 East Lyme vs. No. 5 Waterford at 6:30 p.m.The Division II semis, also Monday, will take place at Windham. Danica Agsalud led Waterford (14-7) with 36 assists, six digs and an ace, while Jennie Macca-Barnes had 16 kills, eight digs and five aces, Brielle Kenney 16 digs, three aces and nine kills and Lucy Walker nine kills, six digs and two aces. Fitch is 10-11.• Top-seeded Wheeler defeated No. 8 New London in the ECC Division II quarterfinals, 25-16, 25-10, 25-13. Alyse Manley had 21 digs and Raelyn Lopez 18 for New London (2-16).• Dominique Sanchez had 28 digs for second-seeded Bacon Academy, which beat No. 7 Putnam 25-8, 25-12, 25-15 in the ECC Division II tournament quarterfinals. Maddie Meyer added six kills and 10 digs for Bacon (11-10), Allie Field had four aces, Bailey Handwerk six kills and five aces and Jillian Snow 23 assists.• Junior hitter Savannah Malinowski had seven kills and two aces for No. 3 Montville, which defeated No. 6 Lyman Memorial 25-8, 25-16, 25-20 in the ECC Division II tournament quarterfinals. Rose Johnny finished with 14 assists, four digs, three kills and an ace for Norwich Tech (12-9), Abby Ulrich had 10 kills, four digs, an assist and two aces and Nyomi Barboza had eight kills and two aces.Girls' swimming• Julia Morcos won the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.51), the 100 butterfly (1:03) and swam a leg on East Lyme's winning 200 free relay team as the Vikings defeated Ledyard/St. Bernard 98-81 in the ECC. Ruby Thoms (50 freestyle), Katelyn Haynes (diving) and Ella Pape (100 backstroke) also won individual events for East Lyme (7-3, 6-2). Thelma Grogan won the 200 individual medley (2:38.08) and the 100 breaststroke (1:21.78) for Ledyard/St. Bernard (2-9, 2-6). Girls' soccer• Skylar Raymond scored twice for The Williams School in a 2-0 win over Watkinson. Goalie Natalie Boissevain started the Blues off by saving a penalty kick to keep the game tied at 0-0. Shortly thereafter, Raymond scored on an assist by Marlee Anselmi. Claire Butler assisted Raymond's second goal in the second half.
