Five displaced by fire in Norwich

Norwich ― Five people were displaced by a fire Monday that damaged a home at 23 McKinley Ave.

The Norwich Fire Department was called to the home at 6:10 p.m. along with volunteers from Laurel Hill, East Great Plain and Yantic fire departments. Fire was showing from the rear of the second floor of the single-family home, Norwich Fire Battalion Chief Michael Dziavit said in a statement.

The occupants were able to evacuate the building but two suffered injuries, including one person who was treated for smoke inhalation, Dziavit said. Both were taken to Backus Hospital for treatment. One firefighter suffered a minor hand injury but was treated at the scene and returned to duty.

It took about 30 minutes for the fire to be brought under control.

The Red Cross is assisting the five adults displaced by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office.
