Norwich man killed after transformer falls on his truck

Franklin ― A 61-year-old Norwich man died Thursday after the truck he was driving snagged low-hanging wires and caused an electrical transformer to topple onto the cab of his truck, state police said.

Gary Dean Pizzo of 2 Fairground Circle in Norwich was fatally injured in the 6:44 a.m. accident on Champion Road in Franklin, near the intersection of Route 87. Pizzo was driving a 2020 Kenworth Construction T880 truck, hauling a roll-off dumpster owned by waste removal and dumpster rental company CWPM at the time of the crash.

Police said Pizzo was traveling west on Champion Road when the truck struck low-hanging communication cables or wires over the road. After hitting the wires, police said, the two Eversource utility poles that were holding the wires broke and a transformer fell on top of the cab of the truck. Pizzo died from his injuries.

State police said the accident remains under investigation.
