Police: New London man dies after driver flees traffic stop in Ledyard
Ledyard ― Police said a 27-year-old New London man died in a rollover crash Thursday night on Route 12 after the car’s driver fled from a traffic stop at a high rate of speed.
Aaron Baldwin Jr., 27, of 14 Rosemary St., New London, was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Backus Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said in a news release.
Two other people in the vehicle also were taken to the hospital.
Police said at 9:36 p.m. on Thursday, they stopped a white 2011 Acura TSX for speeding. The driver, Amber Lahue, 23, of 255 Williams St., New London, sped off in the middle of the stop “at a high rate of speed.”
According to the report, police and witnesses saw Lahue “illegally passing vehicles northbound on Route 12.”
Minutes later, people called Ledyard Dispatch to report a roll-over accident on Route 12 near Holmberg’s Orchard, and police said officers arriving on scene determined it was the same vehicle that police stopped earlier.
Police said Lahue and a rear passenger, identified as Maria Goncalves, 28, of 12 Wild Rose Place, No. 1, Waterford, exited the vehicle on their own, while Baldwin, the second rear passenger, was extricated from the vehicle by first responders.
Police said the three people were taken by ambulance to Backus Hospital in Norwich. Baldwin Jr. was pronounced dead by medical personnel at 10:46 p.m.
The Regional Accident Investigation Team is investigating. Police encourage anyone with information to call the Ledyard Police Department at (860) 464-6400.
