Attic fire displaces family in Groton
Groton ― An attic fire displaced one family from a Lewiston Court duplex Tuesday evening.
Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said his department and the Submarine Base Fire Department were dispatched at 6:26 p.m. to 30 Lewiston Court for a report of a problem involving a ceiling vent fan. Poquonnock Bridge firefighters arrived five minutes later to find a fire in the attic of the one-story duplex.
He said some firefighters stretched a hose line while others cut a hole in the roof to ventilate smoke and fire, which was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes.
There were no injuries, Rheaume said. One family from the two-family residence was relocated due to fire, smoke and water damage. The Red Cross was on the scene assisting with relocation.
Most of the damage was confined to the attic and bathroom area, according to the chief.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office, which was still on the scene as of 8 p.m.
Groton Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics responded to the fire, along with the Town of Groton building official and representatives of Groton Utilities.
