Man charged with smashing self-checkout lanes at Walmart
Norwich ― Police arrested a Norwich man Thursday morning who they say used a hammer to smash a series of touch-screen monitors at the self-checkout kiosks at Walmart.
William Washington, 30, whose current address is not available, was charged with first-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny and breach of peace.
Police said they were called to the store at 220 Salem Turnpike, shortly before 7 a.m. for reports of a disturbance. Police said employees from Walmart reported Washington had been waiting in line to purchase a cell phone and picked up a hammer from a shelf and started breaking the computer monitors.
Held in lieu of a $5,000 bond, Washington was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Norwich Superior Court.
