State police return portions of cryptocurrency stolen from Norwich victim

A special state investigative unit was able to track and eventually return a chunk of bitcoin and other assets stolen from a Norwich victim earlier this year.

Members of the state’s Cryptocurrency Working Group that included Eastern District Major Crime Squad detectives and Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force members were contacted on March 15 by Norwich police regarding a substantial cryptocurrency theft, according to a statement posted Friday on the state police Facebook page.

The unidentified victim reported that approximately $159,700 worth of bitcoin and other cryptocurrency had been stolen from their cold storage wallet.

The stolen currency was traced to two exchanges, where the assets were later seized. On Tuesday, state police returned the bitcoin and other assets with an estimated value of $42,129.
