Reports of shots fired lead to arrest of New London man

New London ― Reports of shots fired in the area of Chapel Drive on Saturday led to the arrest of a 24-year-old New London man, who police said was highly intoxicated and assaulted a police officer.

Wayne “Trey” Vendetto III of 29 Chapel Drive was charged with interfering with police, breach of peace, first-degree threatening, first-degree reckless endangerment and assault on a police officer.

Witnesses reported seeing Vendetto, who was apparently upset with his pregnant girlfriend, with a gun and later hearing a “pop” of a gunshot near his home, police said. Earlier in the evening, police said Vendetto’s girlfriend told police he had grabbed the steering wheel while she was driving on Pequot Avenue and swerved into oncoming traffic, stole her phone and pointed a gun at her, saying, “I don’t want to see you again.”

Police said a witness from the neighborhood reported hearing three or four gunshots at 10:51 p.m., but police searched the area with the aid of a K-9 team from Waterford and did not find a gun or any shell casings. Vendetto faces no firearm-related charges.

Police said Vendetto was confrontational with police, assaulted one officer and had to be restrained and taken to the hospital for an evaluation. Free on a $25,000 bond, police said Vendetto is due to appear Nov. 25 in New London Superior Court.
