Man pleads guilty to role in fatal Norwich home invasion
A former Norwich man arrested for his role in a fatal home invasion in Norwich opted to accept an eight-year prison sentence on Tuesday rather than face a jury in an upcoming trial.
Tyshan McKethan, 42, entered guilty pleas to three criminal charges on the eve of trial, after a six-member jury had been selected. As part of a plea agreement, McKethan will be sentenced on Jan. 28 in New London Superior Court to eight years in prison and three years of probation.
McKethan, a convicted felon with multiple previous convictions, entered guilty pleas to charges of third-degree assault, accessory to third-degree burglary and possession of narcotics with intent to sell.
Police say McKethan and Lawrence Beauford of New York entered a 40 School St. home in Norwich on the evening of Jan. 23, 2022, to collect money from a resident there. Beauford, police said, was shot and killed by the resident. The resident was also shot in the abdomen, but survived.
McKethan had faced charges of home invasion, conspiracy to commit home invasion, attempted first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, third-degree assault and sixth-degree larceny.
McKethan’s pleas were entered under the Alford Doctrine, which means he does not agree with all of the allegations against him but would rather plead guilty than face a conviction at trial and the possibility of a harsher sentence.
