Police: Elderly man who crashed into Niantic clothing store was drunk

East Lyme — Police said a 71-year-old man was drunk when he drove his car into a parked vehicle and a business off Main Street in Niantic on Thursday evening.

Police said Edward Durgin turned in to the driveway of his home at 417 Main St. — an assisted living center called Crescent Point at Niantic — struck the parked vehicle, then continued into the building at 413 Main St., which houses a clothing store called Indigo.

Though Durgin wasn't injured in either collision, a crew took him to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London as a precaution.

Police said the impact damaged the building at 413 Main St. but didn't specify to what extent.

Officers charged Durgin with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Information about his court date wasn't immediately available.
