Driver tells East Lyme police he's too drunk for field sobriety test
East Lyme — A 56-year-old Waterford man told police he was too drunk to perform field sobriety tests after they say he crashed his car into a fence at the Rustic Cafe Saturday afternoon.
Steven P. Murphy, of 270 Boston Post Road, Waterford was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving with a suspended license, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, traveling unreasonably fast and driving without insurance after the 4:30 p.m. crash at the bar, located at 516 Boston Post Road. Murphy was not injured and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court Jan. 7, 2021.
Police said that after the crash, Murphy waited inside the bar for them to arrive. They said he had difficulty maintaining his balance, had slurred speech and there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. Police found numerous full and empty liquor and beer bottles in his car.
Police said Murphy refused to perform any field sobriety tests, telling officers “he was too drunk to do them.” He also refused to complete a breath test.
