Police: Griswold man repeatedly violated probation by sending nude images

Police have charged a 24-year-old Griswold man with violation of probation after he allegedly violated multiple conditions of probation, stemming from a 2017 offense that resulted in a conviction for risk of injury to a minor.

State police arrested Austin Bestwick of 1426 Hopeville Road on Tuesday.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the sex offender unit was supervising Bestwick because he had sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. Police said Bestwick sent the victim pictures of his penis and had her send images via Snapchat.

After being convicted on a charge of risk of injury to a minor, Bestwick was sentenced in January 2019 to five years in jail, suspended after 18 months, and five years of probation, police said.

The affidavit said that on March 16 of last year, Bestwick admitted in court to being in violation of probation. The basis was having unapproved electronic devices, bypassing monitoring software installed on approved devices, and sending nude images of himself on Snapchat. Judge Hillary Strackbein ordered no social media for 90 days, and then said Bestwick could only access Instagram and was not to send any images.

The affidavit said that after a home visit on Dec. 30, the Department of Adult Probation determined that Bestwick was regularly accessing Snapchat and trading images with a 17-year-old girl, telling her he was 19 and sending pictures of himself from 2014, when he was 16.

Police said Bestwick was arrested Tuesday, because he was involved in a car crash in Voluntown and when troopers responded, they found he was wanted on an active warrant. According to court records, he is being held in lieu of a $150,000 bond and hasn't entered a plea yet.
