In Colchester, Ready To Move Right In
By Gretchen A. Peck
Looking for a classic Cape-style colonial, with recent improvements, a garage, sizable yard and tree-lined privacy? Consider 141 Brainard Road in Colchester. Listed last week for $399,900, this three-bedroom home was built in 1992 and has been well-maintained, according to listing agent Barbara Dubois, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Calabro & Associates in Rocky Hill.
The seller—who has owned the home for 24 years, the listing agent noted—is offering a ready-to-move-in option to a qualified buyer. The 2,007-square-foot home is situated on 1.46 acres in a rural neighborhood setting. The floor plan offers distinctive rooms, with wide transition arches, creating an open flow from the living room, dining room and eat-in kitchen.
There are hardwood floors on both the main living level and upstairs among the bedrooms. In the living room, there’s a wood-burning fireplace, which the owner appended with a more efficient wood stove—a cozy and welcome addition during the cold New England winters.
In 2021, the owner made a number of improvements to the property. The kitchen was updated, with quartz countertops and brand-new appliances in stainless finishes. It has a small island, with cabinets and drawers, extending the meal-preparation and serving surfaces, as well as storage space.
“The kitchen opens to an adjacent, large breakfast nook overlooking the backyard through glass sliders,” Dubois noted. “It has views of the woods behind the house.”
Two bathrooms—the primary suite’s bathroom upstairs and a partial bath on the first floor—got a renovation facelift, as well.
Dubois explained that the currently unfinished basement is dry and could be finished to add some additional living space to the house—perhaps a playroom, a craft or creative space, a workshop, or an exercise room. A washer and dryer are perched on a platform in the basement, raising them to a more comfortable height for loading and unloading.
Should interested buyers need a home office, as many homeowners require today, Dubois suggested the third bedroom, which has windows that look out to woodlands.
This home has an oversized two-car garage. Dubois referred to it as a “mechanic’s garage,” and said that in addition to the two bays, it has a workshop area.
For people moving the region—perhaps for a job or some other reason for relocation—the listing agent offered some insight into Colchester and the quality of life here.
“It’s a thriving ‘bedroom community,’ and the first Connecticut town to be certified as a community wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation,” she said. “It’s a serene and quiet neighborhood, heavily wooded and treed, well-established.
“Colchester is an up-and-coming town of interest on the home-buying radar,” she added. “Prices are still reasonable, and homes appeal to buyers looking for a private, peaceful location, untouched by commercial and industrial sprawl. This classic, New England community within driving distance of amenities—shopping, eating—but completely secluded.”
141 Brainard Road is close to area farms, some of which offer seasonal farm shares—putting fresh produce within each reach. This location also places the homeowner close to several state parks, including Gardner Lake State Park, Devil’s Hopyard State Park and Mooween State Park.
