    Conn men’s soccer gets past Denison in NCAA DIII opener

    Lancaster, Pa. — Elliott Spatz scored the game-winner in the first overtime Friday and Matt Scaffone added an insurance goal in the second overtime, both on penalty kicks, as the Connecticut College men’s soccer team defeated Denison 3-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Division III tournament.

    Conn (12-1-5) advanced to play Franklin & Marshall in the second round at 6 p.m. today. Franklin & Marshall beat Geneva 1-0 in the opener.

    Conn opened the scoring just 2 minutes, 52 seconds into the game on a goal by Jack Marvel assisted by Alessandro Horvath Diano and Marco Cezero, as the Camels earned three corner kicks in the opening three minutes, scoring on the third.

    Horvath Diano’s corner found the head of Cezero, who flicked the ball to the back post, where Marvel headed it home.

    Denison tied the score 1-1 with a goal by Rohan Tripathy at 12:54, after which the teams were scoreless, with Denison keeper Tommy Prokos keeping the Camels at by until Spatz scored at the 94:08 mark. Spatz was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.

    In the second OT, Scoffone’s initial penalty kick was stopped, but he followed it up to give the Camels an insurmountable 3-1 lead.

    Conn outshot Denison 22-14. Conn’s Peter Silvester made five saves to secure the victory. Prokos had seven saves for Denison (12-5-3).
