High school roundup: Marshall, No. 4 Saints open the season with win in Spirit of Doc Classic
Hartford — Amare Marshall finished with 19 points and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player as the fourth-ranked St. Bernard boys’ basketball team opened the season Saturday with an 83-65 victory over Cheney Tech in the Spirit of Doc Classic at Trinity College.
Amyre Gray added 18 points, Nazir Rembert 16 and Curtis Marshall 11 for St. Bernard, which next plays at 8 p.m. Monday in The Day Holiday Classic at Mohegan Sun Arena vs. No. 1 East Catholic.
In other games:
• Leland Hine had 18 points to lead Old Lyme to a 70-45 victory over Norwich Tech. Eddie Fiske added 16 points and Charlie Sahadi had 10 for Old Lyme (2-0), which led 22-3 after one quarter. Daniel Hess had 15 points for Norwich Tech (0-2).
• Peyton Luther had 13 points and Zion Bunkley 10 points and 20 rebounds for Ledyard in a 59-55 victory over Griswold. Ledyard is 1-1 overall, Griswold 0-1.
• Hall used a 10-0 run in the second quarter to pull away for a 58-46 victory over Montville. Hall’s Chase Hanawalt led all scores with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Jace Kobyluck led Montville with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Girls’ basketball
• Sese Atchinson and Emily Orcutt each had eight points for Norwich Free Academy in a 46-39 loss to Newtown. NFA (1-2) led 14-5 after one quarter, getting six points each from Atchinson and Neveah Yorke, and 25-24 at halftime but Newtown outscored the Wildcats 10-2 in the third quarter to pull away.
• Mariette El Khoury had 14 points and seven rebounds in Fitch’s 59-40 to Hamden. Hamden is the top-ranked team in the preseason GameTimeCT top 10 poll. Meleeya Robbins had 10 points and Ada Ellis a team-high eight rebounds for Fitch (2-1).
Wrestling
• NFA’s Jackson Sorel (126 pounds), Dugan Marsh (138), Dylan Vanegas (150) and Zaire Wallace (190) won championships at the Waterford Lancer Invitational, lifting the Wildcats to a second-place team finish. Southington won the title with 222 points, followed by NFA (194), New London (183) and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech (175).
Hunter Sanchez (120 pounds) and Timothy Breault (285) won their weight classes for Lyman/Windham Tech. Old Lyme’s Chase Catalano won at 175.
Lyman/Windham Tech’s Lucas Judd (132) and James Hiltz (165) and New London’s Henry Santana-Liriano (285) earned runner-up finishes, while NFA’s Landon Herdic (106), Ledyard’s Tatianna Irizarry (113), Griswold’s Seth Christie (120), NFA’s Edward Lavoie (132), New London’s Shea Quashie (138), Old Lyme’s Taiyo Gemme (144), Waterford’s Devon Powers (175) and New London’s Kaiden Smith (215) were third.
• East Lyme/Norwich Tech’s Lincoln Carlson (175 pounds) and Brayden Soleau (190) finished first at the Guilford Invitational, as the Vikings were fifth out of 18 teams with 137.5 points. East Lyme/Norwich Tech’s Jonathan Harms was second at 215 and Angel Stimson (106), Gianno Pearson (120) and Anthony Caisse (150) were fourth.
Fencing
• Gianni Torres was 6-0 to lead the St. Bernard boys to a pair of victories in epee, defeating New London 7-2 and Fitch 5-4. Fitch edged New London 5-4, with Fitch’s Logan Whaley and Reece Johnson winning the last two bouts to bring the Falcons from behind.
St. Bernard also beat New London 5-4 in boys’ foil, with Zach Kobyluck sealing the win with a 5-3 victory. New London senior Andrew Mendez was undefeated in the loss. St. Bernard also beat Fitch 5-4 and Fitch topped New London 6-3. Fitch’s Aiden Bordelon was undefeated in both contests.
In girls’ epee, Fitch beat New London 8-1 and St. Bernard 7-2 behind Eliza Shariff and Elaina Brookhart, who combined for 12 of the Falcons’ wins. St. Bernard beat New London 7-2.
In girls’ foil, Fitch’s Pia Nicolas sealed a 5-4 win over St. Bernard 5-4. St. Bernard beat New London 5-4, clinched by St. Bernard’s Zhuning Gao, and New London's Stephanie Flores-Aguilar was undefeated in the Whalers’ 6-3 win over Fitch.
• The Waterford girls went undefeated in a tri-meet with NFA and Bacon Academy. The Lancers beat NFA (8-1) and Bacon (5-4) in foil and Bacon (9-0) and NFA (8-1) in epee. Bacon edged NFA in foil 5-4 and NFA defeated Bacon in epee 7-2.
In boys’ foil, NFA topped Waterford 6-3, while each team won a match in epee, with NFA defeating Bacon (6-3), Waterford defeating NFA (7-2) and Bacon taking a 5-4 win over Waterford.
