    Local roundup: UConn’s Strong helps Team USA win Women’s AmeriCup

    UConn women’s basketball freshman Sarah Strong helped the United States win the FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup gold medal as Team USA beat Canada, 80-69, Sunday night in Colombia.

    Strong averaged 7.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.2 steals per game in the tournament. The No. 1-ranked recruit in the 2024 freshman class, Strong is now a three-time U.S. gold medalist. She also won gold at the 2022 and 2023 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cups. The gold medal is the USA’s 11th consecutive dating back to 2000. The United States is now 71-2 in U18 women’s competition.

    In other college notes:

    • Sarah Christensen (East Lyme) capped off a terrific York (Pa.) College women’s lacrosse career by being named to the IWLCA All-American third team. She also made the MAC All-Commonwealth first team and earned IWLCA All-Metro Region honors.

    She finished the season with 33 caused turnovers, 42 groundballs, 72 draw controls, two goals and four assists from her defensive position while helping York qualify for the NCAA Division III tournament. She appeared in the IWLCA All-Star game.

    District 10 softball (10-12)

    • Avery Gallerani pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts as Waterford beat Montville 15-1 in four innings in a winners’ bracket game. Reese Firmin had two hits and drove in four runs, Kennley Stoddard had two hits and Kayla McPhillips drove in two runs for Waterford. Sophia Kononchik had a hit and scored a run for Montville.

    Waterford also beat East Lyme/Salem 4-3 in seven innings on Sunday. Firmin pitched two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Firmin also had an RBI triple. East Lyme pitcher Bea Aldana struck out 11 in six innings and teammate Kennah Perkins had a double.

    District 10 baseball (10-12)

    • Blake Gianakos, Rocco Russo and Jonathon Menchacha combined on a no-hitter as East Lyme beat Ledyard 20-0 on Sunday. Leadoff hitter Brayden Santos had three hits and four RBI, Alexander Biscotto homered and Biscotto, Russo, Owen Ament and Alexander Mitchell had two hits each for East Lyme. Jackson Petrowski struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings for Ledyard.

    • Keegan Henry pitched a one-hitter, scored three runs and had two doubles as Mystic beat Groton 16-0 on Sunday. Mark LaPietra and Cam Bibby had two hits each, Jayce Chapman had a ground-rule double and Parker Chappel scored three runs for Mystic. Twyon Martin had the hit for Groton.
