    Local roundup: East Lyme, Waterford win twice on opening day of Babe Ruth 14 state tournament

    Waterford — With the first day of the Babe Ruth 14-year-old state tournament rained out on Saturday, that meant to advance to the winners’ bracket final, East Lyme and Waterford would each have to win twice Sunday.

    Which they promptly did.

    Handily.

    That will pit the two teams against each other in the winners’ bracket Tuesday, with the victor in that game going on to Friday’s championship round.

    For East Lyme, Jackson Cooley drove in four runs on three hits, including two doubles, in an 11-3 win over Nonnewaug to start the day. Mason Williams earned the win for East Lyme, pitching six innings and giving up only one hit. Cole Nichols contributed to the win with two hits.

    In the second game, East Lyme came back with a 7-2 win over Norwalk, which had received a bye into the second round. Cooper Siragusa pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts for the win and Bryce Williams went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Wyatt Farrior added a double and three RBI.

    Waterford, meanwhile, defeated Newtown 5-0, followed by a 10-3 victory over Trumbull, which also received a bye into the second round. Against Newtown, Jamison Waggoner earned the win, pitching five innings and recording seven strikeouts. Brennan Devine had a double for Waterford.

    Waterford’s Jameson Barlow earned against Trumbull with five shutout innings in relief.

    In Monday’s losers’ bracket games, Newtown will face Norwalk at the Waterford Babe Ruth Field and Nonnewaug will meet Trumbull at Waterford High School. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

    Junior Legion

    • Gabe Grossman and Nick Ingraham combined to allow just one run in a 5-1 victory over South Windsor in a Junior American Legion baseball game. Zaydin Martinez led the way with two hits and Camron Gronholm had a double for Waterford.

    District 10 baseball (8-10)

    • Wyatt Pinkerton pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead Waterford to the District 10 championship for ages 8-10 Saturday with a 4-0 win over Mystic. Jaxson Pawlak went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Waterford. Neco Rose struck out nine for Mystic.

    District 10 softball (8-10)

    • Bonnie Silvestri struck out six over six innings to earn the win for Waterford in a 6-3 victory Saturday over Groton/Mystic/Lyme 3. Grace Ort had three hits and three RBI for Waterford and Summer Donahue also had two RBI. Harlow Chaney had 10 strikeouts for Groton/Mystic/Lyme and Chaney added two hits.
