    Local roundup: Podeszwa earns save at NECBL All-Star Game

    Bristol — Waterford’s Connor Podeszwa (Tufts) of the Mystic Schooners pitched a scoreless ninth inning Sunday to earn the save at the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game at Muzzy Field in Bristol, as the East team topped the West 3-0.

    Mystic’s Tyler Minick (UConn) and Christian Scanlon (Merrimack) each had hits for the East, Matt Brinker (Northeastern) had an RBI and Connor Harris (Winthrop) and Max Haug (George Washington) pitched scoreless innings in relief in the sixth and seventh, respectively.

    Sanford catcher Colin Barczi (Vanderbilt) won the MVP award for the East.

    • On Saturday, Mystic blanked the Danbury Westerners 6-0. Scanlon had a homer, double and two RBI for Mystic and Jack Goodman (Northeastern) also had two hits and two RBI. Jake Francis (Villanova) no-hit the Westerners over 2.2 innings of relief to earn the win for the Schooners (20-15).

    FCBL

    • Alan Porter III (Monmouth) and Anthony Tirado (UMass) each had two hits and an RBI for the Norwich Sea Unicorns on Sunday in a 7-5 victory over the New Britain Bees. Jimmy Mulvaney earned the win in relief, striking out four over two innings, and Gavin Hawkes (Rider) was credited with the save.

    The FCBL All-Star Game will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dodd Stadium, with seven members of the Sea Unicorns playing for Team Rose City, led by Norwich manager Kevin Murphy.

    Junior Legion

    • Colby Sheehan pitched a complete game, striking out nine, as the Waterford Junior American Legion baseball team defeated Milford 11-0 Monday. Nick Ingraham doubled twice and Sheehan also had two hits.

    NL-Waterford Speedbowl

    • Tim Jordan picked up his third win of the season in SK Modifieds on Saturday at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, nailing a restart and holding off Todd Owen and Anthony Flannery.

    In the SK Lights Division, Sami Anderson became the seventh different winner in as many races in the first of two division races on the night, holding on over a hard-charging Nickolas Hovey.

    Evan Bourgeois won the second SK Lights race becoming the first repeat winner in the division this season with Ed Gertsch Jr. and Aaron Plemons picking up wins in the two 25-lap Street Stocks races. That marked the second straight win for Gertsch Jr., who then finished second to Plemons in the second race.

    Charles Beal won the Trucks Division, his fourth different division in Speedbowl history, while Jase Mongeon and P.J. Evans took a pair of 25-lap Legends Cars events.

    Up next at the Speedbowl, on Saturday, July 27, will be Christmas in July. Spectators on both Wednesday and Saturday this week can bring an unwrapped toy to receive $3 off an adult grandstand admission, with Saturday’s main attraction being a 50-lap Mini Stock race.
