    Local college roundup: Camels take down No. 22 Hamilton in field hockey

    New London — Bridget McGann and Kellyn Scheel scored first-half goals and goalie Liz Winemaster made the lead stand up as the Connecticut College field hockey team edged No. 22 Hamilton 2-1 Saturday at Silfen Field.

    It was the third straight win for Conn (5-5 overall, 2-4 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference) and its first against Hamilton since 2017. The Camels have defeated ranked opponents in each of the last two seasons.

    McGann scored her team-high eighth goal of the season on a back-handed shot in the first quarter on a pass from Katie Dolan. Scheel made it 2-0 with 5 minutes, 46 seconds left in the second quarter off a penalty corner, with Sadie Gearan sending the ball to Scheel on the right post.

    Lilly Truchon scored for Hamilton 5:45 into the second half. With 2:45 to play, the Continentals pulled their goalie to try to score the equalizer, but they couldn’t crack Winemaster, who finished with seven saves.

    Women’s soccer

    • Chloe Koubel scored on a cross from Ella Gazo with three minutes left in the first half as Conn College defeated Hamilton 1-0 in a NESCAC game at Freeman Field in New London. Conn (5-6, 2-4) snapped a three-game losing streak, getting three saves from Ella Kahrl for the shutout. The Camels outshot Hamilton 10-5.

    Men’s soccer

    • Peter Silvester had three saves to notch his seventh shutout of the season as Conn College tied Hamilton 0-0. Conn (5-1-4 overall, 2-1-4 NESCAC) will play at cross-town rival Coast Guard at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

    Volleyball

    • Josie Kelly had 20 assists and Katherine Randall 12 digs for Conn College in a 25-23, 25-23, 25-14 loss to Tufts in a NESCAC matchup. Mila Chan had eight kills and Rae Wartelle seven for Conn (10-6, 1-5).

    On Friday night, Conn earned its first NESCAC victory of the season with a come-from-behind victory over Bates, 27-29, 25-16, 22-25, 25-16 and 15-11.

    Chan led the way with 19 kills and five aces, providing the firepower for the Camels in the fourth set with six kills. Conn won 13 of the final 16 points to send the match to a deciding fifth set. Randall’s service game led the Camels to a 10-2 lead in the fifth, with Taylor Merrifield later wrapping up the match with her fourth ace of the night.

    Wartelle finished with 12 digs and four blocks, while Randall added nine kills and 12 digs. Kelly paced Conn’s offense with 43 assists and 11 digs and Merrifield tacked on a match-high 28 digs.

    Men’s cross country

    • Jacob Bright, led Conn College with a career-best 8K time of 28:14.8 to finish 41st and the Camels finished eighth of 18 teams with 237 points at the James Earley Invitational. Conn’s top runners, who raced at the Pre-National Invitational last weekend, did not compete. Also scoring for Conn were Blake Rogers (52nd, 28:38), Max Jervey (54th, 28:46.7), Dax Arnold (72nd, 29:26.5) and Nicholas DeMarco (79th, 29:38). Wesleyan took the team title with 32 points.

    Women’s cross country

    • Conn College finished ninth out of 16 teams at the James Earley Invitational. Conn’s top runners, who raced at the Pre-National Invitational last weekend, did not compete. Leading the pack for the Camels was Julia Coyle, who crossed the finish line in 20th place, covering the 6K course in 19:34.4. Also scoring for Conn were Phoebe Drohan (41st, 20:26.8), Sarah Steudel (55th, 20:45.1), Gabbie Mogavero (58th, 20:50.8) and Cleo Kilpatrick (66th, 21:03.5). Williams won the team title with 44 points.
