    Local roundup: Fitch co-op takes ECC swimming title with an ‘electric’ victory over East Lyme

    Groton — Lucy Doyle-Kusy and Jill Arcilla, both from the Fitch High School cooperative swimming team, tied for first place in the 100-yard breaststroke Tuesday in 1 minute, 19.25 seconds to clinch a 94-76 victory over East Lyme and earn the Eastern Connecticut Conference regular-season title for the Falcons.

    “This was an electric meet,” Fitch coach Ali Colussi said. “The leader changed many times and the score was tied three times.”

    Jai-Lynn Wheeler won the 200 freestyle (2:07.16) and 100 freestyle, out-touching East Lyme’s Ella Pape 57.04-57.08, and was a member of a pair of first-place relay teams.

    Wheeler joined Doyle-Kusy, Olivia Novak and Anna Orphanides to win the 200 free relay and teamed with Orphanides, Audrey Schrage and Addison Fulling to finish first in the 400 free relay.

    Fulling (200 IM), Orphanides (100 butterfly), Gabby Donnarummo (500 freestyle) and Schrage (100 backstroke) also won individual events for Fitch (7-2, 6-0). The Fitch co-op consists of swimmers from Fitch, Stonington, New London and Wheeler.

    Pape took the 50 freestyle for East Lyme (5-3, 4-2).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Abby Mayorga, Shay Burnside and Misha Lewandowski scored in the first quarter and Kairi Grant completed the scoring for Stonington in a 4-0 victory over Waterford in the ECC. Quinn Miller had 18 saves for Waterford (8-5, 5-4). Stonington is 10-1-1 overall, 9-0 in the ECC.

    • Kate Erikson had four goals and an assist as East Lyme blanked Killingly 9-0 in the ECC. Sophia Gibson added three goals for the Vikings (9-3, 8-1), while Lily Gibson and Callon Keefe also scored and Mia Lloyd finished with three assists.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Freshman Ka’Maya Little finished with 18 kills, 13 service points, four aces, three blocks and four digs as New London edged Norwich Tech in five games, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8. Mia Donastorg added eight kills, four service points, an ace and two blocks for the Whalers (2-15), Adriana Vitorino 22 digs, 14 service points and 15 assists, Alyse Manley 14 digs, 14 assists, 11 service points and five aces and Mercedes Pratts 31 digs.

    Men’s golf

    • Mitchell College senior Shamus McLean fired a 76 to give him a two-day total of 153, good for third place overall at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship played at Concord (N.H.) Country Club.

    McLean earned All-GNAC first team honors. Mitchell finished seventh in the team standings. Also scoring for the Mariners were Jack Hayes (tied for 13th), Liam Kane (35th), Nathan Mahoney and Israel Smith.

    College field hockey

    • Bridget McGann scored twice for Conn College in a 3-2 victory over Trinity. Bridget Mason also scored for the Camels (6-5, 3-4 New England Small College Athletic Conference), who led 3-0 then held on for their fourth straight win. Goalie Liz Winemaster finished with four saves.

    Earlier in the day, Conn sophomore Kellyn Scheel was named NESCAC Field Hockey Player of the Week. Scheel scored three goals and led the Camels to a 2-0 record last week, including a 2-1 victory over No. 22 Hamilton. She scored two goals, including the first of her collegiate career, in a 6-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State and added a goal in Conn’s first win against Hamilton since 2017.
