    Local roundup: Bacon boys’ soccer wins Class M opener in penalty kicks

    Colchester — Birch Collins, Troy Johnson, Jean-Paul Fougerouse and Eddie Hageman converted penalty kicks and senior goalkeeper Zach Carroll made two stops in the penalty-kick round as the 10th-seeded Bacon Academy boys’ soccer team edged No. 23 Ledyard 1-0 Friday in the opening round of the Class M state tournament.

    Bacon earned a second-round game Tuesday at home against No. 26 Lewis Mills. Carroll finished with five saves during regulation for the Bobcats (8-3-7).

    Ledyard finished the season 6-6-5.

    In other games:

    • Nick Zaprianov scored all four goals for Lyman Memorial and Cody Rahmann had two assists as No. 14 Lyman Memorial defeated No. 19 Wheeler 4-2 in the first round of the Class S state tournament.

    Wheeler (9-9) struck first just 57 seconds into the game on a goal by Jonas Gagnon, assisted by Jack Dowrey, and goalie Luke Dowrey saved a penalty kick shortly thereafter to keep the Lions in the lead.

    Zaprianov scored on a penalty kick at the 14:40 mark and added another goal less than two minutes later on a through ball by Rahmann. Zaprianov made it 3-1 early in the second half off a corner.

    James Hiltz made six saves for Lyman (9-6-3), which advanced to play No. 3 East Hamton in a second-round game Tuesday. Luke Noonan added a goal for Wheeler, Jack Dowrey had two assists and Luke Dowrey made 10 saves.

    Girls’ soccer

    • Anna Bussman and Olivia Lovendale had two goals each for 21st-seeded Old Lyme in a 9-0 victory over No. 12 Parish Hill in the first round of the Class S state tournament. Kate Walsh, Kanon Oharu, Kaela Hoss, Vivian Boller and Hailey Suisman added goals for the Wildcats (7-7-4), who meet No. 5 Coginchaug in the second round Monday.

    • No. 21 New Fairfield scored three unanswered goals in the second half and defeated No. 10 Montville 5-1 in the first round of the Class M tournament. Allie Kondash scored on a penalty kick for Montville, which finished the season 11-6-2. Morganne Hill had two goals for New Fairfield.

    • No. 27 Norwich Free Academy fell to No. 6 Staples 4-0 in the first round of the Class LL tournament. Fabby Gomes and Hayleigh Young combined for 11 saves for NFA, which finished the season 4-7-6.

    Cross country

    • Williams School eighth-grader Lena Cosentino passed two runners in the last 200 meters to finish third overall at the Housatonic Valley Athletic League championship meet at the White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield.

    In the boys’ race, Williams juniors Jadiel Thomas and Mack Rodgers were third and fifth, respectively. Calvin LaFrance finished 13th for the Blues, Conor Gingras 18th, Jonathan Patton 19th and Jacob Bates 20th.

    CTC all-stars

    • Following is a list of local 2024 Connecticut Technical Conference all-stars for volleyball, boys’ and girls’ cross country and boys’ and girls’ soccer:

    Volleyball: Grasso Tech, Emma Pavlak, Jada Muirhead (honorable mention); Norwich Tech, Olivia Luurtsema, Abby Ulrich, Victoria Tirado, Kristen Romanski.

    Boys’ cross country: Grasso Tech, Lachlan Singer, Tyler Collins; Norwich Tech, Guiseppe Race.

    Girls’ cross country: Grasso Tech, Brooklyn Quinones; Norwich Tech, Angelica Fahrenholz, Zoe Avery, Amelia Hawkins, Analia Arriaga.

    Boys’ soccer: Grasso Tech, Fidencio Adames, Joseph Moore (honorable mention), Chris Prosdocimo (honorable mention), Ethan Dion (honorable mention); Norwich Tech, Gavin Bastien, Justin Portillo, Roman McElwee.

    Girls’ soccer: Grasso Tech, Kylee Morrison, Haley Shafer; Norwich Tech, Maya Stimson, Aniya Gibbons, McKenzie Savaria (honorable mention), Tessa Lambert (honorable mention).
