    Local college roundup: Conn College advances in NESCAC men’s soccer tourney

    Amherst, Mass. — Connecticut College advanced to the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament by beating No. 3 Amherst on penalty kicks 4-2 Saturday.

    The No. 6 Camels (8-2-6) were tied with Amherst 1-1 after regulation and two scoreless overtime periods. Conn goalie Peter Silvester made two saves and the Camels made four of their five penalty kicks to advance. Conn plays No. 4 Williams in the semifinals next Saturday at Middlebury. No. 8 Williams beat No. 1 Tufts on penalty kicks to advance.

    Matt Quiros-Newton scored in the first half for Conn and Michael Cherico of Amherst tied the game with 19 minutes left. Matt Scoffone, Elliot Spatz and Marco Perugini scored in the penalty-kick phase then Silvester made his second save to set up the game-winner from teammate Gavin Mpiana. Silvester had 11 saves along with the two stops in penalty kicks.

    In other games:

    • Coast Guard closed out its regular season with a 6-0 loss to Babson in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. The Bears (11-5-2, 4-3-1) are the No. 3 seed in the NEWMAC tournament and host No. 6 Emerson in a first-round game on Tuesday.

    Football

    • Mike Ingraffia threw for five touchdowns as WPI beat Coast Guard 38-14 in a NEWMAC game. Josh Castro caught two of the touchdown passes for the Engineers (5-3, 3-2).

    James Wheeler IV rushed for 100 yards on 21 carries for Coast Guard (4-4, 2-3), which trailed 31-7 early in the third quarter. Joey Armentrout and Dennis O’Shea ran for touchdowns for the Bears, Amr Baadani caught 10 passes for 84 yards and Matthew LaBouliere had eight receptions for 98 yards. Jael Cuellar and Patrick McCaskey had eight tackles each for Coast Guard.

    Women’s cross country

    • Coast Guard finished second at the NEWMAC Championships as MIT, the top-ranked team in the country, won its 17th straight title. MIT scored 16 points and Coast Guard had 65. Coast Guard’s Claire Semerod and Paige Phillips earned all-NEWMAC honors. Semerod finished 5th (21:57) and Phillips was 9th (22:05). The Bears’ Lauren Mellon was 17th (22:49) and Sophia White was 20th (23:02).

    • Conn College finished sixth at the NESCAC Championships. Grace McDonough led the Camels with a eighth-place finish (21:13) to earn second-team all-NESCAC honors. Conn’s Abby Williams was 32nd (21:52), Abby Fernald was 34th (21:53), Alsacia Timmerman was 35th (21:53) and Kiera Tallas was 39th (21:58).

    Men’s cross country

    • Coast Guard finished fourth at the NEWMAC Championships as MIT won its 26th straight title. Paul Hobbs led the Bears with his 19th-place finish (26:03). Ryan Weston was 25th (26:16) and Brendan Fant finished 34th (26:41).

    • Conn College finished ninth at the NESCAC Championships. Williams won the title with 35 points and Conn scored 140. Matt Scardigno led the Camels with a third-place finish (24:51) to earn All-NESCAC honors. Conn’s Ellis Iurilli-Hough was 44th (25:48) and Anthony Belford was 74th (26:23).

    Women’s soccer

    • No. 8 Conn College gave top-seeded Wesleyan all it could handle before the Cardinals won 1-0 in double overtime in the NESCAC tournament quarterfinals. Ella Kahrl made 11 saves for the Camels (5-9-2).

    • Coast Guard finished out the regular season with a 0-0 tie against Wheaton in a NEWMAC game. The No. 8 Bears (2-10-6, 2-5-4) play at No. 1 MIT in the NEWMAC tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday.

    Field hockey

    • No. 2 Williams beat No. 7 Conn College 2-0 in the NESCAC tournament quarterfinals. Liz Winemaster made eight saves for the Camels (6-10).

    Volleyball

    • Conn College closed out its regular season with a 3-0 loss to No. 20 Colby in a NESCAC match. Mila Chan had 10 kills and nine digs, Amanda Kriedler had seven kills, Josie Kelly had 25 assists and Taylor Merrifield had 17 digs for the Camels (15-8, 3-7). Conn is the eighth seed in the NESCAC tournament.
