Niantic Bay Playhouse stages ‘The Wedding Singer’
Celebrate East Lyme is Saturday, and what better way for the Niantic Bay Playhouse to get into the spirit than by opening a new show?
The theater, located in the former Niantic Cinemas building, starts its run of “The Wedding Singer” on Thursday. This musical, set in 1985, is based on the movie about wedding singer Robbie Hart, who is dumped at the altar by his fiancée and then falls for waitress Julia. Julia is engaged to a Wall Street bro … but, considering this is a romantic comedy, for how long?
In the Niantic Bay Playhouse version, which is directed by Erin Sousa Stanley, Nick Rapuno plays Robbie (whom Adam Sandler portrayed in the 1998 movie) and Kate Eberle is Julia (the Drew Barrymore role).
The stage musical version features songs by Matthew Sklar and Chad Begeulin. The show’s book is by Tim Herlihy and Begeulin.
“The Wedding Singer,” Niantic Bay Playhouse, 279 Main St., Niantic; opens Thurs. and runs through Aug. 4; 7:30 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 2 p.m. Sun.; tickets $35, $32 seniors, $30 students; (860) 850-5072, nianticbayplayhouse.org.
