More than 6,300 without power as heavy rain slams Conn.

Heavy rain and strong winds are slammed parts of Connecticut Sunday and will last into Monday, potentially causing power outages and flooding.

As of 5:45 p.m. Sunday 6,351 customers across the state were without power. Of those, 5,645 customers were in Bridgeport and 689 customers were in Fairfield, both served by United Illuminating.

In the Eversource service area, there were 97 customers without power at 6:15 p.m. Sunday. Eversource serves 1,308,304 customers. At 11 p.m., Eversource reported 173 customers without power

The National Weather Service is warning of hazardous weather conditions, with a flood watch in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Monday.

Flash floods are expected with 1 to 4 inches of rain predicted to fall, just a week after heavy rains pummeled the state.

“Given similar rain totals fell just a week ago, soils remain saturated and rivers remain swollen, yielding the potential for renewed flooding risks,” the weather service said.

Areas in Hartford, Vernon, Windsor Locks, Willimantic, Milford, Putnam, Orange and Vernon are at the highest risk of flooding, the NWS said.

As the heavy rains fall, southeast winds are expected to blow up to 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, the NWS said.

Eversource said that power outages are possible and they are closely monitoring the forecast and are “ready to respond to the anticipated rain and wind storm.”

The energy company said they are bringing in additional out of state crews and positioning line crews across the state to respond to any damages or outages.

“The high winds expected with this storm combined with more rain, saturating the ground further, have the potential to bring down trees and limbs onto electric lines and equipment causing outages, and we’re planning accordingly,” said Steve Sullivan, Eversource’s president of electric operations in Connecticut in a statement. “Crews will be staged around the state with a heavy emphasis in the areas expecting the highest winds – in the eastern and southeastern part of the state – so they’re ready to restore power as soon as it’s safe to do so.”

According to NWS forecasting, by 5 a.m. Monday, the chance of precipitation will be 100% with rain and wind picking up.

On Monday, temperatures will be around 60 degrees with wind gusts around 47 mph and 100% chance of rain between 1 and 2 inches. Rain is expected to stop by about 10 p.m., the NWS said.

Eversource said customers can prepare for the storm by making storm kits with essentials like water bottles, flashlights, batteries, non-perishable foods, pet food and any needed medications. Residents are also encouraged to make sure their devices are charged.

In the event of the storm, people and pets should stay away from downed wires. Outages can be reported to Eversource through eversource.com or by calling 800-286-2000. Downed wires should be reported to 911.
