Truck driver cited after 35,000 pounds of cheese is lost on I-84 in Cheshire during rollover crash

Cheshire — The driver of a tractor-trailer that crashed on Interstate 84 early Wednesday, dumping more than 35,000 pounds of cheese, was cited for not staying in his lane, officials said Friday.

The 30-year-old from Georgia got a ticket for failure to maintain proper lane, according to Connecticut State Police.

The crash happened about 3:30 a.m., when the tractor-trailer was headed east near Exit 26. The driver lost control, struck a guardrail in the right shoulder and flipped over so that the cab was on its roof, state police said. The trailer also was upside down.

The driver was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital in Waterbury to be treated for injuries that appeared to be minor, police said.

Bags of cheese — ranging from pepper jack to provolone — were open and scattered on the side of the highway, according to a report from the state Department of Consumer Protection.

In all, the cheese weighed 35,350 pounds, said Kaitlyn Krasselt, DCP spokesperson. It was declared unsafe for consumption and had to be destroyed, she said.

The cheese will be incinerated, Krasselt said.
