    Man arrested after allegedly driving under the influence and smashing into police cruiser

    A man is faces several charges after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing into a police cruiser before fleeing the scene, officials said.

    Carlos Gavilano, 55, of New Milford, was arrested and is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading responsibility resulting in serious physical injury, evading responsibility resulting in property damage and failure to maintain lane.  His bond is set at $25,000, according to the Norwalk Police Department.

    On Friday around 11:47 p.m. a Norwalk police officer was struck while driving in the area of 205 Main St. by a Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said in a release. The Jeep then allegedly fled the scene but responding officers located Gavilano and the vehicle shortly after.

    The Jeep had “heavy damage” and was disabled near the scene of the accident. The officer who was in the cruiser while it was struck was transported to Norwalk Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

    Police said the suspect had struck another vehicle in the area of 157 Main St. prior to hitting the police cruiser. The operator of that vehicle did not report any injuries.

    Gavilano is due to appear in court in Stamford on September 6, police said.
